Cybook Gen3 New Edition: More Memory, Improved Button

Lo and behold, fresh into our tattle box, Bookeen tips us with the release of a new edition of the Cybook Gen3 e-reader!

Cybook Gen3 New Edition offers three two improvements over the original Gen3 release:
  • More internal memory: the Cybook internal memory reaches 512MB now (480MB is available for storage)
  • A new firmware: Firmware 1.1 offers more stability, a longer battery lifetime and a more reactive button interface (the upgrade is also available for the original Gen3)
  • A revised housing: the navigation button offers a soft hand feeling with a tactile feedback

Prices remain the same (Standard $350, Deluxe $450), and as for availability, Bookeen estimates an average shipping delay of 12 days.

Could we do an exchange for our old device to the next one? Is there a replacement program?

Sell it and buy a new one. Gen3's fetch good prices 2nd hand, because they're always in short supply.

I seriously doubt that an exchange programme is feasible - they are different hardware supplied by the manufacturer; it's almost certainly not possible to physically "upgrade" an old Gen3 to the new spec.

You can always return it since it does not satisfy the specifications and you have two years to do that. The specification it does not satisfy is that the source code for GPL:ed code is not provided and the specifiation says it uses "embedded linux". When something more fun to buy appear that is always an option.

Are you going to do that yourself, Tommy? I know that you've said that you feel unable to sell yours.

Is the nav button rounded off now where one presses rather than the current "sharp" edging? I think that's what people complain about. If you have to press hard, it can become painful after a bit!

I haven't kept up with this device. Does it support hierarchical folder navigation yet?

Nope.

Which is rather stupid of Bookeen considering that the Cybook can now hold 400+ ebooks without using an expansion card.

It's been promised for the next firmware release "soon" (whatever "soon" might mean).

Harry,

Using the last firmware update as a "base", I'm estimating the next firmware release around early to mid September. Or at least that's when they'll probably announce it.

Curious, I have got the new hardware, but the Version 1.0 (build 674)...

Guess I'll need to update it then!

Maybe. But not until something easy to buy and better appear.
