Neilson, William Allan (editor): Shelf of Fiction Vol 4 Ver 1. 30 Jan 2014

Vol 4 of the Shelf of Fiction contains: Guy Mannering, written by Sir Walter Scott.

Plot from wikipedia.
Guy Mannering is set in the 1760s to 1780s, mostly in the Galloway area of southwest Scotland, but with episodes in Cumberland, Holland, and India. It tells the story of Harry Bertram, the son of the Laird of Ellangowan, who is kidnapped at the age of five by smugglers after witnessing the murder of a customs officer. It follows the fortunes and adventures of Harry and his family in subsequent years, and the struggle over the inheritance of Ellangowan. The novel also depicts the lawlessness that existed at the time, when smugglers operated along the coast and thieves frequented the country roads.

This book was published in 1917 from an original dating back to 1815. It was so popular in 1815 that the entire printing was sold out in the first day.

This book includes comments and commentary from William Neilson and others. It has extra notes in the back by the author (with links) to expand of some of the topics and provide some anecdotes. There is also a glossary in the back for distinct Scottish words, also by the author. Let me know of any errors you find.

Enjoy,
Dale
