k2pdfopt: optimizes PDFs for viewing on e-readers

K2pdfopt optimizes PDF/DJVU files for mobile e-readers (e.g. the Kindle) and smartphones. It works well on multi-column PDF/DJVU files. K2pdfopt is open source.

HOW TO USE K2PDFOPT:
No install is required and no extra files or packages are necessary to run k2pdfopt. Just drag and drop your PDF/DJVU file icon onto the k2pdfopt icon to convert it. You will be prompted for conversion options (as of v1.16). Press <Enter> to convert the file using the default settings. A new PDF file with _k2opt at the end of the name will be created. The output file is optimized for viewing on Kindles and other mobile readers with 6-inch screens (if the settings are not customized). Or drop a folder full of PDF/DJVU files onto the k2pdfopt icon to batch process. You can even drop a folder full of bitmap images to have them converted into a single PDF as if they were pages of a PDF file.

Works great and produces a very readable K2 output. Any chance to do one for the Kindle DXG? Or, could you suggest which options I'd need to use since I'm not that computer savy. Thanks.

I have now tested this program and I am so impressed by it. It quickly converts dual column scientific papers with formulas and figures so that they can be easily read on the Kindle 3. It works much better than Duokans two-column function and is in my opinion one of the most important tools ever to have appeared for eBook readers.

True, that's a pity.

However, if you have several pdf's to convert, you could install "VirtualBox" from Oracle (previously a Sun µSystems product) & install k2toPDF. I've done that & it works fine.

It would be much nicer to have a mac native version of k2toPDF though

Well, it's just a matter of convenience for me - I can put them on my KDX or iPad as it is.

It rendered my (scanned document) pdf with multiply sized images, split some columns, enlarged some segments, cropped others pages, and really made a suite of differently zoomed images...

All in all, and despite the weird and inconsistent page styles, it produced the easiest reading and best output I have seen for a PDF.

... and I have tried many, many, many PDF "enhancers" to 6 inches screen.

This is a gem.

Many thanks Willus. I downloaded the new version and it works great. Now it's much easier to select options to fine-tune things. Best Kindle addon ever imho!
