William James Stillman was a noted painter (known as "the American Pre-Raphaelite."), journalist, and photographer. He also served as US Consul in Rome, Italy during 1861-1865 and in Crete during 1865-1868. An insurrection broke out in Herzegovina in 1875 and he went there as a correspondent of The Times. His letters from the Balkans aroused so much interest that the British government was induced to lend its countenance to Montenegrin aspirations.

He had several adventures (covering uprisings, wars and general chaos) and hardships along the way. This autobiography is usually in two volumes, but I combined both of them into one book.

Being an artist myself, I was somewhat familiar with his paintings and photographs, but I was surprised to find out he was a noted journalist as well. I find it fascinating that he was talented in so many different mediums. This guy had an amazing life.
