Smile Kate Bush's new album

I've been reading Under the Ivy recently, and by doing a little looking on the 'net I learned that Kate Bush is releasing a new album next month titled Director's Cut. The first single, "Deeper Understanding," was released on her website and YouTube this week.

The song might seem to make a pretty obvious point these days, but these words were first heard in 1989. For the album, Bush is doing something no one would have expected: revisiting older material. She's completely reworked 11 songs from The Sensual World and The Red Shoes.

Having finished Under the Ivy, I can make a reasonable guess about why she chose those two. It was the lowest point in her life personally, so she probably felt there were some good songs on those albums that didn't get the care they deserved. Graeme Thomson, who wrote the book, seems to feel the same.

Bush also says she's finishing up an album of brand new music soon, though "soon" for her might require a grain of salt. I'm looking forward to both.

Cool! I love Kate Bush. She does good videos. I'll have to watch that one when I get home.

I'm sure you already know this, but the song and video of "Cloudbusting" were based on the book "A Book of Dreams".

"A Book of Dreams" is Peter Reich's poignant memoir of his early life with his father, the controversial psychiatrist Wilhelm Reich. In the video, Donald Sutherland plays the part of Wilhelm Reich and Kate Bush plays the young Peter. The book itself appears momentarily in Donald Sutherland's coat pocket.

She's also been given permission to use text from James Joyce's Ulysses in a song.

Personally love Kate Bush - lyrically and melodically she is brilliant.

That is happy news. She had the track recorded with Joyce's words originally, thinking that Ulysses was in the public domain. She played it for director Jimmy Murakami, who described it as "stunning," with the thought of him directing the video for it. He suggested it wasn't PD, so she checked and ended up having to rewrite the words.

It reminds me of the band Daniel Amos trying to get permission in 1983 to use "Hollow Men", but Eliot's heirs refused. The lyricist Terry Scott Taylor wrote a paraphrase of it, which was performed with the music of the last song of their previous album played backwards.
