Do Your Kids Have an Ebook Reader? Or Will They Eventually?

I saw a youngster with a kindle today, and I thought that was cool (a nice change from video game systems *g*).

Now I'm curious: how many of you have purchased ebook readers for your kids or are thinking about it? I'm sure younger children and electronics wouldn't be a good mix, but how about middle grade/junior high students and teenagers? Are e-readers for everyone in the household the new trend?

I don't have any kids, but my beau and I are giving his 12y/o nephew an ereader for Xmas. If I could get every kid I knew who was a reader an ereader, I would. That's a habit I would want to encourage.

We purchased our middle daughter a Sony PRS-300 a couple of months ago for an early Christmas present. She is a voracious reader and after seeing both Mum and dad's ereaders decided that an ereader was for her.

Alison even took her ereader to hospital last week when her daughter (our fist grandchild) was born two months premature. (Both are well and her husband cannot stop smiling!)

Our youngest little lady (16 year old daughter) loves paperbacks and old books and has no desire as yet to move down the ebook path.

Both my youngest nephews are getting Sony readers for Christmas this year and their sister is getting a V-Tech V-Reader as well.

My Parents (mid 70's) got their first reader this month, as well as myself and my wife. Guess you know what we'll all be doing now...

My daughter is three and a half. When I got my ereader she said "Daddy, can I get one, too, when I know how to read?" Seems inevitable, really, in the long run

After I got a PRS-650 my PRS-505 'migrated' (seemingly on its own) to our son (15y).

Does giving them ipod touchs count as a ebook reader?
They gave me a sales pitch on why they need them and the mentioned that they could read books with them. I'll be pleasantly surprised if I ever catch them reading on them. It looks like there are too many other things to do on them than read.

I don't have any kids, but I've been thinking about getting my 8-year-old niece a Sony PRS-350 as a gift.

I think they will eventually, but right now the cost of a device and books compared to the cost of books from Scholastic, the benefit of supporting schools with Scholastic purchases, and the lack of care my 7 year old son shows his possesions, has the paper books ahead of an ebook reader by a very large margin!

I'm thinking about downloading a book one of these days to try him out on it. I'm not sure what kind of a book would interest him though. He has read all of the "Wimpy Kid" books and is really big into anything Pokemon right now. I've tried to get him to read some books I remember from his age, but since I'm a girl they might not necessarily interest him.

My 4 year old daughter has a V-tech "V.Reader".

There are some public schools here in Florida that are now giving each student their own Kindle. They come pre-loaded with tons of classics, required reading, and some text books. Unfortunately, this program hasn't made it to our county yet.

My youngest son got an iPod touch for Christmas last year and hasn't put it down yet. Even so, I don't think he has even added the Kindle app. It is a rather small screen to read an entire book on. He may be getting a Kindle for Christmas. I am trying to make a decision on it by the end of the week. My other kids are grown and several of them are Kindle owners.

For my grandsons I have looked at the Vtech VReader. It is really nice and Walmart has it bundled with a carrying case and 6 download books for $50. My confusion is that all the other books seem to be in cartridge form, selling for $20 each. I need to do a bit more research to see if other books can be downloaded cheaper.

When I bought the K2 I gave my K1 to my mother. When I bought my K3 the K2 went to my 12yo daughter. She's an avid reader and this has opened up a new world for her. She's read several PD works from here at Mobileread.

I've briefly looked at this for my daughter (who is way too young for this yet, but I'm super excited about it). As far as I can tell, it requires cartridges for the books, which is what ruled it out for me.

The other thing I had looked at was Disney Digital Books, which you need a computer (and internet?) to access, and it's subscription-based. So it's not as portable as the Vtech (unless you have a netbook), but it's a very cool idea. I haven't been able to figure out the pricing yet; the site is impossible to navigate. Do you pay for a subscription AND pay for the books? If you stop paying the sub, do you lose the books you "purchased"?

EDIT: using Google (the site was worthless) I was able to determine that Disney Digital Books costs $8.95/month and it appears that gives you access to all their books. If you stop paying, you lose access to the content.
