Forbes, Archibald: The Afghan Wars 1839-42 and 1878-80. V1. 6 Nov 2010

An account of the first 2 British wars in Afghanistan.

The First Anglo–Afghan War was fought between British India and Afghanistan from 1839 to 1842. It was one of the first major conflicts during the Great Game, the 19th century competition for power and influence in Central Asia between the United Kingdom and Russia, and also marked one of the worst setbacks inflicted on British power in the region after the consolidation of British Raj by the East India Company.

The Second Anglo-Afghan War was fought between the United Kingdom and Afghanistan from 1878 to 1880, when the nation was ruled by Sher Ali Khan of the Barakzai dynasty, the son of former Emir Dost Mohammad Khan. This was the second time British India invaded Afghanistan.

The author:
Archibald Forbes (17 April 1838 – 30 March 1900) was a British war correspondent, the son of a Presbyterian minister in Morayshire, Scotland; educated at the University of Aberdeen. Entering the Royal Dragoons as a private, he gained, while in the service, considerable practical experience of military life and affairs. Being invalided from his regiment, he settled in London, and became a journalist.

The source text is Public Domain in US and UK from Project Gutenberg, e-text 8428 to which I have added illustrations from a scanned copy on archive.org. Then a table of contents and navigation control file has been added.

Edit: to clear up any possible confusion, please note that the original text includes a Table of Contents near the start of the book, but this is text only, not functional. There is an additional, functional ToC at the back of the book (which Kindle recognises as a "Go To" location).

Edit: new version 19 Apr 2012 to fix typo in Part 1, Chapter 2.
Edit: new version 22 Apr 2012 to fix missing text in Part 1, Chapter 5.

enjoy.
regards
Phil
