Specialist USB Plug?
Hi All,
My new shiny is ordered my only worry is that I might not be able to charge it when I am away. My wife has a spcial plug with a USB slot in it which she charges her Smasung MP3 player with. It takes her normal USB lead and she very rarely uses a computer to charge it. So... I wondered if I could use this to charge my 505 when it arrives? I did read somewhere that I need a specialist USB lead but I assume that will come with the reader here is what the charger looks like (except it is white) http://www.porta-charge.co.uk/accessory_0518.html Ta from Tetra |

You can buy a PlayStation Portable charging unit and use that -- they're available cheaply and you can buy one for the car (if you travel a lot) and one for the mains.

Yes, but only the round connector ones, not USB connector.

I agree. I don't know why, but charging with the PSP round connector works better. When I charge my 500 using the USB all day it says 4 blocks. The next afternoon it says 3 blocks, even if I read nothing. Charge with the $5 PSP adapter it says 4 blocks, and still says 4 blocks a week later. The USB voltage might not be quite enough to get a really good charge.
Sure, 3 blocks is hours of reading, and I charge with my laptop to avoid taking another wall wart in my briefcase. If you have the option, go with the PSP round charger. |

Hope that helps. Oh, and I also recommend the PSP charger approach -- if it makes you feel better about it, the Sony folks were using PSP chargers for the Readers they had at their Blogger's Day event two years ago. |

Is there any chance the mods could put a sticky message on every Reader-related page on this site which says:
"ALWAYS USE A PSP CHARGER FOR YOUR READER!!!!! DON'T USE USB TO CHARGE!" Do you know how much anguish this public service notice would prevent, and how many threads would be rendered moot, if every Reader owner saw and understood this simple message? I'm being kinda serious here. Even with a regular Sony-approved usb cable, I've actually drained my Reader's charge when connecting to my work computer and to a wall wort usb charger. Maybe they don't do that because charging using a PSP charger is quite faster than using the USB cable. Sounds nice, but may be a big drawback: Faster charging needs more amperes put through the line, causing stronger heat up of the battery - this may destroy the battery in a very short time.
As long as we all don't know about the specifications of the built-in battery (is it capaple of fast recharging?), we should NOT recommend using the PSP charger without any objections. The fact that Sony people use the PSP charger does not matter much: If this guys have a defective battery, they simply change it. That's a thing we're not able to. I consider charging via USB the safer way until I get hold of the batterie's specifications. |

On the other hand, I have absolutely no problems charging via the USB port on my notebook (and prefer that as I have my notebook with me anyway, and carrying a cable is lighter than carrying yet another adapter), haven't tried charging via a USB hub, but I suspect that a powered hub connected to a computer will work, but an unpowered hub may not. Odd, I picked up a wall to miniusb charger in Spain (to leave at my parents so I didn't have to remember an other cable when visiting them) to charge my 505 and it works fine.
I remember because I had brought a usb-miniusb cable with me originally but the reader won't charge from Dad's ancient laptop. Last edited by Riocaz; 08-28-2008 at 05:45 AM. |

For wall-wart USB chargers, if the red light on top of the Sony lights up (the charge indicator), you're good. If not, it is not charging. Do not go by the "USB connection" message on the screen of the reader - that means nothing. See also this thread. Last edited by acidzebra; 08-28-2008 at 06:23 AM. |

Sony sells a Reader specific charger that is basically just a rebranded PSP charger. I'm guessing it's safe.
