If that was his point, then he didn't make the point very well. He makes it sound as if the second Amazon goes poof .... your library goes poof as well. And, that is simply not true.

Add that to the fact that a lot of your Kindle library could be non-DRM'd books from .... oh, say here, for example .... and his point (if that is his point) becomes even more obscure.

And, as a point of fact .... if my books are backed up (as they are), and Amazon goes belly up, no one is going to be there to enforce Amazon's DRM, are they?? So, who exactly is going to give a crap if I break the DRM on my Kindle books?? Amazon??

However, that storage server, memory stick or external hard drive that is in the same house as your computer won't do you much good if you have a fire. A combination is best.
If you are backing up to an external HD, get a fire and water proof storage container for all the backups. Problem solved.

Fireproof containers are only rated to resist fire for a certain amount of time. I wouldn't rely on them 100%.

This argument against the Kindle is just as silly as arguing "what about pregnancy from rape" as the basis for pro-choice laws. It is just such an insignificant issue.

If Amazon stops manufacturing Kindles, how long do you expect them to stick around on eBay?

Quite a while... because as people start moving away from them more will become available.

Since I do remove the DRM though... I am in no way worried.

eBook Library will allow you to view LRF/LRX on your Windows based computer. So you are not limited to just using a Reader. You can purchase eBooks from Sony and view then on most computers.

But that was precisely the original article's point, you have to mess with the DRM to be assured of permanent access to your books.

And since an ebook readers battery capacity will fall off dramatically after a couple of years, the eBay market is not going to be a viable recourse.

Eh, what is that reviewer on?

"The point everyone is missing is that in Technoland, nothing ever replaces anything. E-book readers won’t replace books. The iPhone won’t replace e-book readers. Everything just splinters. They will all thrive, serving their respective audiences."

Really? So DVDs didn't replace VHS tapes, or that MP3s haven't all but replaced CDs for most of us? Or that e-mail hasn't all but replaced writing letters to people, or that e-mail hasn't all but replaced the fax machine? Did Best Buy not replace Circuit City?

Anyway, do any of us really think we can keep chopping down trees forever? The eReader, perhaps not in its current form, IS the future of reading. No question.
