I'm not an early adapter for these these devices. But I do know that, despite their in-house tests, eReaders often don't really get tested until they're released. I'm guessing (hoping anyhow) that the bugs will be fixed with future updates.

I'm pleasantly surprised to see that B&N has released something! I really thought the Nook was dead. This is the first I've heard of it though, and there are no real reviews on youtube.
I see the software has also changed, I'm hoping library management has improved. |

Good: You can now sort on items within the library like Magazines and Newspapers in addition to books. You can delete items & move to cloud from the device rather than the website only. My Files now shows with images like Books. Home screen is better with more options to select. Bad: Images are too big. As a result they only show title or author. I miss seeing both. My Files is no longer organized by folder view. Now you have to select a menu button to choose between grid image view or list view. I preferred the icons to select. |

Great news from the xda-developers site ! They've found a way to install external apps !!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nook...t3230323/page2 So we don't exactly need root to be able to extend the functionality ! |

Well, no root yet. But if you go the XDA Nook Glowlight thread there are instructions for sideloading apps to NGP.
Hacker Tools was also valuable. It took some effort involving installing Java, Android's Studio Bundle (A 1.1GB download) and re-familiarizing my self with a command prompt (how retro!) I now have Nova launcher, calibre companion, Stockfish Chess and Moon Reader pro running on my Nook. Using Nova Launcher as the default launcher makes the NGP look like an android tablet from another manufacturer with nary a Nook reference to be found. Full screen is sort of broken inside apps with the exception of Moon Reader; its option for full screen fixes the issue. There are full screen apps out there but they require root. Nova crashes when I try to change the wallpaper as well. I haven't tried to install the Play store yet but as I have made the changes I want to my NGP I see no real need to. Perhaps I'll try to install the Play store when root is available. I'm also interested to see how battery life is affected. |

Anyone got any photos showing it running the Kindle app or a launcher?

I've installed Nova Launcher and a couple of other apps on my NGP. Nova seems to mess up the screen saver size, as now the screen savers with the quotes are way too big for the screen. Also, it's evident that this is indeed an eReader and not a tablet. Opening up a resource in Logos Bible Software, for example, gives a black screen. Logos needs hardware acceleration features that the NGP doesn't have (but that the Boyue T62+, for one, does). However, install your favorite reader apps and Calibre Companion, and you have a very fine eReader here. Moon Reader Pro is a good choice. I'll try KOReader next.
I still have a week before my time to return this device to B&N runs out. I'll experiment some more before I decide whether I'll keep my NGP or not. So far, however, if I needed to pick one, the Boyue T62+ seems like the better overall choice. But the jury is still out. |

Just for the record, I tried rooting with the Root Master apk. It didn't work.
I also like Moon Reader Pro on this device - more satisfying than the stock reader. Better at formatting, and with more options. The NGP didn't seem to like the version of KOReader I installed. When I have time, I may try another. But I like Moon Reader Pro with the Outdoor theme. Works quite well. Edit: This NGP is growing on me. I may end up using it as my book reader, and my T62+ for other stuff. As I said before, the jury is still out. But being able to install Calibre Companion, Instapaper and other reader apps makes a significant difference. Last edited by downeaster59; 10-30-2015 at 03:09 PM. |

Out of curiosity, why don't folks make just one forced registration email and use that for all of them? I don't see why you'd need to make a new email account to register for an account you don't actually plan on using.

I do not want manufacturers, or google or whomever to cross-link my account to other devices/sites. Plus, if one of them gets hacked, I do not need to worry about the rest of them. I usually use various addresses in an attempt to make my registration the least useful for anybody that blackmailed me that way ;-). In some cases I sold the device and just passed over the login to registration site to the new owner so they do not have to bother. In case you are talking about multiple folks with the same type of device, there are such initiatives - like the BugMeNot plugin for browser that uses the same registration for the same site for all people out there. I also like to use the mailinator server. You can just invent an address like NotMyEmailAddress@mailinator.com or YouAreBloodyRacketeers@mailinator.com and then head to mailinator.com and have a look at the registration email. Please note that mailinator.com is notorious domain, so many sites refuse to use it as a registration address. So mailinator has numerous alternative names - aliases that you can use. Just search for Mailinator alternative name |
