Just picked up: The Poisoners Handbook by Deborah Blum
Looks very interesting. http://www.amazon.com/Poisoners-Hand...7588335&sr=8-1 Starred Review. Pulitzer Prize–winning science journalist Blum (Ghost Hunters) makes chemistry come alive in her enthralling account of two forensic pioneers in early 20th-century New York. Blum follows the often unglamorous but monumentally important careers of Dr. Charles Norris, Manhattan's first trained chief medical examiner, and Alexander Gettler, its first toxicologist. Moving chronologically from Norris's appointment in 1918 through his death in 1936, Blum cleverly divides her narrative by poison, providing not only a puzzling case for each noxious substance but the ingenious methods devised by the medical examiner's office to detect them. Before the advent of forensic toxicology, which made it possible for the first time to identify poisons in corpses, Gettler learned the telltale signs of everything from cyanide (it leaves a corrosive trail in the digestive system) to the bright pink flush that signals carbon monoxide poisoning. In a particularly illuminating section, Blum examines the dangers of bootleg liquor (commonly known as wood, or methyl, alcohol) produced during Prohibition. With the pacing and rich characterization of a first-rate suspense novelist, Blum makes science accessible and fascinating. (Feb. 22) |

Evolution Rx
http://www.amazon.com/Evolution-Rx-P...7590218&sr=1-1 This is a good book about how evolution has shaped who we are from a medical perspective. Countless books and experts have advised adopting the "cave-man diet" that avoids processed foods and refined carbohydrates. But how and what to eat is only the beginning of what human evolution can teach about health. Based on the latest research, Evolution Rx provides readers with an understanding of the underlying science and a practical means to making nutritional and lifestyle changes, from exercise and injury prevention to addressing allergies, heart health, cancer, and more. Dr. Meller, one of the country's pre-eminent practitioners of evolutionary medicine, explores such topics as: |

I wish I'd remembered it earlier, but at least I wasn't too late to watch it. Next week on The Fabric of the Cosmos Brian Greene looks at the nature of time. It's all based on his book The Fabric of the Cosmos: Space, Time, and the Texture of Reality.
