Microsoft retires MS Reader along with any the LIT format.
From MS Reader's web page.
"Microsoft is discontinuing Microsoft Reader effective August 30, 2012, which includes download access of the Microsoft Reader application from the Microsoft Reader website. However, customers may continue to use and access the Microsoft Reader application and any .lit materials on their PCs or devices after the discontinuation on August 30, 2012. New content for purchase from retailers in the .lit format will be discontinued on November 8, 2011. ... (more...)" =X= |

I used MS Reader exclusively on my old IPAQ PDA, before installing Mobipocket and finally moving to ePUB.
Like other older formats, its day is past now. |

Hooray, another proprietary format bites the dust... great news as I always had to convert the damn things whenever I wanted to read on a non-MS based device... keep the ePub coming...

LIT was my preferred PDA format as well. I remember downloading about 100 books from Baen in the format, though I only ended up reading about a half-dozen all the way through. Those tiny low-rez screens were not very eye-friendly.

Actually thank god for clit.exe and the backing up of old key-files.
![]() I think I finally have all my .lit purchases liberated. ... and then, of course, calibre (but that's a given). ![]() |

I am surprised it took this long for Microsoft to "retire" the format and reader. I converted the books that I had in that format long ago. First to .mobi and finally to .epub.
I read many books on my HP Journada with the reader, most from Baen. When I finally purchased my first dedicated reader I finally retired the HP to the electronic recyclers. Ken |

On topic - This kinda sucks. I liked the MS reader. It was my first ebook reader I had on my laptop some time ago. |
