epub to mobi - keep non proportional font ?
working with guitar / bass tab which is written for non proportional fonts [Non-proportional fonts, also known as monospaced fonts, assign exactly the same amount of horizontal space to each character. Monospaced fonts are ideal for creating tables of information where columns of characters must be aligned. Text created with non-proportional fonts often look as though they were produced on a typewriter. Two commonly-used non-proportional fonts are Courier and Monaco on the Macintosh and Courier New and FixedSys on Windows.]
looks good in epub: note that epub source has courier new font explicitly set span.sgc-1 {font-family: 'Courier New'; font-size: 11px;} - in other fonts such as default below, the display will look wrong intro [Pick up] G|-----| |-------| D|-----| X15 |-------| A|-----| |-------| E|-----| |-0-1-2-| but looks good in calibre epuib viewer. when I convert epuib to mobi & re-view, the mobi version is no longer using a proportional font so the output looks awful for Kindle. HOw can I force mobi to use non proportional font ? |

For the whole book to be in that font...
In Conversion settings, 'Look and Feel' - 'Extra CSS' put body {font-family: 'Courier New'; font-size: 11px;} |

no joy - mobi output is still rubbish in calibre viewer:
intro [Pick up] G|-----| |-------| D|-----| X15 |-------| A|-----| |-------| E|-----| |-0-1-2-| I've condensed the tab for space, but most of it is constant 8th notes. This is what bass plays at famous guitar line. |---------------------------------| |---------------------------------|second time, instead of 3301, play 3012. |--------------------3331---------| X2 |33333333333333333333-----3333301-| maybe its a calibre viewer config issue though - I see that defaults to times new roman but I can force it to courier new...... nah it's rubbish when opened in kindle for PC so it goes bad at mobi conversion stage not at viewer sstage Last edited by cybmole; 02-06-2011 at 05:58 AM. |

When you have mobi problems like this it's usually best to suspect the Mobi format/Amazon is at fault, because they usually are:
http://www.knowing.net/index.php/200...-improvements/ http://forums.kindledirectpublishing...essageID=10385 Looks like if you put your chords in <pre> or <code> tags they might look ok on the Kindle. I'd suggest asking in the Kindle/Mobi sub-forums for more detail. Last edited by ldolse; 02-06-2011 at 06:14 AM. |

The attached zipped sample of HTML converts to a MOBI which looks OK to me in Kindle for PC and the calibre Viewer.
I don't have a Kindle so I can't test any further. |

Use the Kindle Previewer for a much more accurate preview of the display on a Kindle device. Check out: http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.htm...cId=1000234621
BTW, the .MOBI file looks good in Kindle Previewer at the small font sizes. I would definitely recommend that you avoid any and all indents in the .monospace style. The long lines wrap less often when you don't waste valuable screen space with the indent. |
