kindle application

Hello, I use an ipad to read my books on the kindle application. I found an excellent PC application, Calibre, which allows me to convert and transfert books from the pc to my ipad. My ipad has the kindle application and the ibook application. Whenever I transfer books to the ipad they always end up in the ibook library, is there a way to force calibre to transfer books to the kindle application, much more user friendly. Thanks everyone for all your help

Use Calibre to convert your ebooks into .mobi format.

Open iTunes with your iPad plugged in, click on the device, then apps, then scroll down to the File Sharing section and click on Kindle. The list of documents will light up.

Open the directory where your .mobi files are kept. Click and drag them to the Documents pane to transfer them.

AFAIK there's no automatic way to send from Calibre to Kindle. I may be wrong, though.

FYI: Kindle's use up to four different formats

1. Mobipocket (Amazon bought Mobipocket)
2. Topaz (Amazon's own in-house quick & dirty scan & OCR format)
3. KF8 (Amazon's response to ePub - Mobipocket with HTML4 & CSS2)
4. Print Replica (A PDF in a PDB wrapper)

Not all Kindle hardware and software can read all four formats, but they can all read the first two. No-one except Amazon make Topaz format files, so the safe bet for reading on a Kindle is Mobipocket.

File extensions:
1. is often azw
2. is often azw1
3. is often azw3
4. is often azw4

But actually, you might also get books with .mobi and .prc, and sometimes the later formats also turn up with a .azw extension.

If they don't have DRM, calibre will convert all the formats except Topaz, but since Topaz always has DRM that's not an issue.

If they do have DRM, you'll need to find Apprentice Alf's blog. And with the tools from there, even Topaz can be converted, although since it's from the OCR text, not always with good results.

If the tools don't work right, there is nothing you can do to convert Topaz files.

By that I mean that the converted book may well have OCR errors in it. In complex books or ones from low quality originals, the results can be poor.

There's really not a lot to be done about it. Topaz format books are a fascinating solution to getting reflowable accurate ebooks from hard copy, but they aren't good as source material for conversion to a more common ebook format.
