Wells, H. G.: Tono-Bungay. v.1. 2 Feb 2009
H. G. Wells - 'Tono-Bungay'
'Tono-Bungay' was published in 1909. Although there are some SF elements (e.g. flying machines, radioactive substances), it is primarily a semi-autobiographical novel. Wells deals with social issues facing Edwardian society - changing moral codes, economic dishonesty, political corruption, women's changing roles, the rise of the press and advertising. Many of these issues are still relevant today, despite it being the 100th anniversary of the novel's publication.
This version originated from Project Gutenberg; but has been revised to correct textual errors, and include some passages that are missing in the PG text.
Please let me know if any further errors are found.
v1.1 - Rejigged to alter hyphens to emdashes where necessary; and also footers for the first chapter. Thanks to Patricia who pointed these issues out.
