New Ebook retailer in USA

This might interest anyone that wants to support their local independent book store with an ebook purchase rather than any of the Big 3 or other ebook seller. Bookshop.org is launching ebooks. Here's the link if anyone wants to check them out https://bookshop.org/info/ebooks

And if the eBook has DRM, you have to use their app with it. No thanks.

Does anyone have a link to a free eBook so I can test this?

Bookshop.org replaced IndieBound as the independent bookstores online affiliate link-up.

They have no stated physical address and instead use a small mailbox rental business in Brooklyn.

1. Seems to be only for USA.
2. Tied to their app, so you don't really get to have the ebook. Yes, B&N, Apple, Amazon do that, but Kobo and Google don't as they use ADE for DRM.

It seems ill-conceived and doomed without all the big publishers directly involved as an alternate to Amazon. Sony gave up. Apple went DRM free on mp3s. Publishers need to do that or Amazon will completely own the market. DRM doesn't stop pirates and Amazon has already over 90% of world wide English Ebooks and about 80% of USA online paper format sales.

Smashwords/Draft2Digital will outlast it.

it certainly doesn't support any of my local bookstores.

You left out eBooks.com for not forcing the use of an app.

I did check the ISBN of one of the eBooks and it matched the ISBN of the same eBook at Kobo. So I'm thinking they use ePub. I don't know what can be done or not. I would need a free eBook with DRM to try.

I checked their prices on several books. None of ones I checked were less expensive than Kobo. For example, Ursula K. Le Guin's The Dispossessed was $17.66 US compared to Kobo where the price I see is $12.99 Cdn. Checking Kobo US, the price showed as $12.99 US.

BTW, they do have a UK site at https://uk.bookstore.org for those in the UK.

They’ve gone with developing their app using Readium LCP. Readium actively prevent content being used outside their own ecosystem and they hunted down and legally threatened anyone who’s ever tried to crack the DRM, inc the NoDRM devs.

Per The Verge, all five major publishers are involved, FWIW.

Also, per Engadget, Kobo devices may support bookshop.org titles by the end of the year.

In any sense more than allowing the retailing? Obviously those five support Google, Apple, Kobo, Barnes & Noble (Nook), Amazon and ebooks.com but not Smashwords.

They'd need to do a lot more than "be involved".

What does than mean? It can't mean direct on the device as that competes with Kobo shop.
If it means bookshop org uses ADE, then it's not Kobo specific.

Neither of those have been reliable sites for years, especially Engadget, but not as bad as goodereader.
