Amazon UK to stop selling Bloomsbury's books

Amazon UK has said that it will cease selling Bloomsbury’s print and e-books from midnight on 23rd January, saying negotiations between the giant retailer and the publisher had broken down.

A statement put out by the retailer explained that it had been unable to negotiate new terms with the publisher, despite extending the contract. Bloomsbury has yet to comment but the action could seriously wound the publicly-quoted pu]blisher, and re-open old sores between Amazon and trade publishers over trade terms.

It is also a high risk strategy for Amazon, which will disenfranchise a number of Bloomsbury’s bestselling and high profile writers including Sarah J Maas, Gillian Anderson, and JK Rowling. The move extends to the publisher’s print books and Kindle titles, though Amazon stressed that customers could still buy print titles for third-party sellers off its site. Print books sold off its US site are not impacted.

Amazon, Apple, Google etc would not be allowed to do what they do with retail pricing in UK or Ireland physical shops or bookshops.

The Content provider on Amazon, Apple, Google etc mostly sets the retail price and the online seller offers a % of that to the provider. That's illegal in UK or Ireland physical shops or bookshops.

It should be that the content provider sets a price to Amazon, Apple, Google. Microsoft etc and then the retailer can retail at any price they want to charge. Why are they allowed to do this system, illegal in regular retail in many countries, online everywhere.

I only know the last author, though by name only. Since Mrs. Rowling is considered a persona non grata in certain far left circles I wonder if these circles are rejoicing if Amazon in the UK and the rest of Europe should really stop selling her books. That could provide some interesting entertainment. Where's my popcorn? :-P

Amazon is not the rest of Europe. So even if Amazon wasn't selling Bloomsbury books, other shops are.

eBooks.com, Google Play Books, and Kobo sell Bloomsbury. And then there are many shops that sell the pBooks.

But Amazon over 90% of English Language ebook sales worldwide.

Also eBooks.com, Google Play Books, and Kobo are not much use for ordinary Amazon / Kindle users, especially eink, though majority use the Kindle App.
