Amazon Announces Kindle Colorsoft

Today Amazon announced the first E Ink Kindle with a colour display, the Kindle Colorsoft.

They also announced updated versions of the basic Kindle, Kindle Paperwhite, Kindle Paperwhite SE, and Kindle Scribe.



The Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition uses a 7" 300dpi B&W/150dpi colour screen, probably a version of the eInk Kaleido display, comes with 32GB storage, auto-adjusting frontlight, wireless charging, USB-C, and is IPX8 waterproof. £269.99/$279.99

The basic Kindle has a 6" screen, higher contract, faster page turns and 25% greater maximum brightness. It comes in Matcha or Black only. £94.99/$109.99

Kindle Kids as Kindle, with extras: £114.99

The Kindle Paperwhite has a 7" display with higher contrast, 25% faster page turns, an auto-adjusting front light and 16GB of storage. It comes in three colours: Raspberry, Jade or Charcoal. From £159.99/$159.99

The Kindle Paperwhite SE has the same features with the addition of optional wireless charging and 32GB of storage. It comes in three colours: Metallic Raspberry, Metallic Jade or Metallic Charcoal. £189.99/$199.99

The Kindle Scribe has white borders around the screen, which has a new paper-like texture, and an AI feature to summarize English text.£379.99/$399.99

The Kindle, Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle Paperwhite SE should be available very soon
The Kindle Coloursoft will start shipping on 30th October
The Kindle Scribe will start shipping on 4th December

I can't find anything anywhere that says the Colorsoft screen is 6" - judging by the image of the four devices, it looks to be on par with the Paperwhite and be 7"

Also the links are not to the press release, but a "how to reset your Paperwhite"

This appears to be from the information in the Spanish Language USA Press Release. Which is no longer available, but theverge.com article does has a link to an archived version.

I think the sentence "The Kindle has a 6" screen" in the announcement refers to the basic Kindle, whose official name is simply "Kindle". The Colorsoft screen does look to be around 7" on the picture.

Great news!

I won't be buying these, as I don't like the Kindle software in particular, but with both Remarkable and Kindle starting to use Gallery 3 tech I have high hopes that we will see others join in in a year or two

I mean, at $280 it just has to be, honestly.
Otherwise, it would probably be dead in the water, since the 6" color devices of the competion start at about half the price. ($150 for the Kobo Clara Colour or €160 for the Pocketbook Verse Pro Color.)

That seems to be what the press release said. But until they appear for sale on the Amazon web site, I don't think we'll know for sure.

But remember, the Kobo Clara Colour uses the crappy Kaleido 3 overlay.

This is the first time Kobo will be far behind the Kindle. The color Kindle is going to be much better then the color Kobo Libra.
