getting started with my old PW1 (5.6.1.1)
Hi!
I just joined up, because I switched my e-reading workflow with an iPad to start weaning myself of Amazon reliance more. Since I now have a PaperWhite 1 hanging around unused I thought I'd check into jailbreak options and trade-offs. Note that this device has never been jailbroken. My Kindle's vitals: S/N: B024 1501 2394 0QA8 Firmware: 5.6.1.1 (2689890035) I've been reading a number of related forum articles, and thought I'd take a stab at checking what I think I've learned to see if I'm thinking about it correctly. Here goes (just seeking confirmation or correction): 1) Need to downgrade first, e.g. to 5.3.9 (per PW1 downgrade thread), because PW1 5.6.1.1 firmware doesn't like jailbreaks? 2) Once downgraded, follow jailbreak instructions on the sticky post? 3) Once jailbroken, keep Wi-Fi off to avoid automatic upgrades? 4) Need to sideload and de-DRM ebooks in order to read things like Overdrive library books, etc.? 5) What else might I miss? Do I have the general idea? I'm a developer, know Calibre and Python, and don't fear running scripts, etc., but I don't want to get "cocky". ![]() Thanks! |

1/ Yep. IIRC, that implies doing it the hard way given your FW version (i.e., a dirty unplug during an USBMS session).
2/ Yup. Or the legacy JB thread for whatever FW version you downgrade to, because it's likely to be vulnerable to a couple of different exploits. 3/ Unnecessary on a PW1, it's EoL, there won't be any significant FW update, ever. 4/ No idea how Overdrive works, not available over here ![]() |

No, I know the *concept*, I was wondering about the implementation details on an "old" device like the PW1 (as in, at its most basic: is it even *supported* on the PW1?)

I appreciate the quick response, NiLuJe.
To clarify. I used Overdrive and Libby to push loaned books onto that Kindle for years. I was concerned that downgrading the firmware might either make it incompatible with Amazon's current services, or I would be forced to run in a disconnected mode to avoid an auto-re-upgrade, which would require other steps to get a readable file on the device. |

Oh, on a PW1, I would definitely *not* stick to whatever version you downgrade to, so the point is kinda moot
![]() Definitely go back to 5.6.1.1 after the JB, as I said, it's EoL. |

I think the time limited part is handled on the server end and and executed via a mechanism also present from the beginning, but I don't do kindle library borrows so I'm not sure of that.

A couple of follow-up questions... Sorry, but I haven't been able to find these answers yet. I saw a comment that implies the jailbreak persists through a 5.6.1.1 (re-)upgrade. Correct? Do I just wait for an automatic silent upgrade back to 5.6.1.1, or force it somehow? I can't even figure out where to get the bin from. I'm hoping I'm almost there. |

Not sure a sync would pull it on a PW1, but, since it's the final FW version, it's not hard to get to ;p.
