Exactly. That is why I recommend to turn off Aeroplane Mode after manual firmware update.

I've never seen a Kindle firmware update not working properly due to needing some updated fonts. The fonts are included in the firmware when you download.

I've always done the majority of Kindle updates manually. I've never known an update that could only be done ota.

After the manual firmware update, the kindle wants to download the fonts OTA and it will nag about it after every restart.

And when it does trigger re-indexing, it can take a considerable amount of time (if you have lots of content on device).

Again, I've never heard of this or even seen it and I've done plenty of manual updates in airplane mode. Besides, what'sthe point of having the system fonts as part of the firmware if you need to download them after a manual install?

People certainly wrote about it on mobileread. One instance was when there was a big change for Chinese fonts.

I've been using Kindles since 2009 and never experienced this nor heard of it.

It's true. I've always done manual firmware update and some new features are only availables after a reboot with wifi activated.

It's probably specific to non-Western (at least ja/zh_*, Thai, and probably some Indic?) fonts, because, well, they're huge and pretty much incompressible and including them in the firmware image proper would make it massively larger (we're often talking 50MiB+ per font): the thought of embedding them in books is faintly horrifying. Also, they change relatively frequently, because in many of the languages that use these fonts, new words means new characters means a new font. Given that hardly anyone reads *all* these languages and would want *all* those fonts, downloading them OTA at need and upgrading them only if they've already been downloaded seems the best solution.

(So, no, you won't have seen this unless you read one of the languages affected. Not all fonts are the same!)

Anyone use 2017 Oasis? I don't get any difference on new firmware 5.13.1. Still no darkmode.

I do and I have finally gotten the dark mode, I do not care for it but I do finally have it after a long time and reloading the firmware at least 2 times due to the update causing high battery usage.
