The 2020 Annual Reading Challenge List Thread

2020 Reading Challenge List Thread

Welcome to our 11th Annual Reading Challenge!

The Annual Reading Challenge is neither a race, contest, nor an “exclusive club”, anyone can join! This is just a fun activity that some of us have enjoyed doing in the past. Many of us have found reading challenges to be an entertaining way to set goals for ourselves, get ideas for books, and see what others are reading.

This thread is for you to keep a running tally for your chosen challenge. Please state your goals at the top of your post (in the title line if you can), and then start your list in the body of your post. As you read books, edit your post to update your list of books read, or other challenge status.

Please Remember: No discussion posts in this thread. Please use the other thread for that. Non-List posts will be deleted or moved to the other thread.

Discussions & Ideas can be found here:

Post #2 of this thread is dedicated to a Table of Contents for all participants in this thread. Names will be added, to this TOC, in alphabetical order with a link to that individual’s post number from this thread.

Previous threads were for 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012, 2011 and 2010

My goal is to buy fewer books than I read. And so end up with fewer unread books.

I start 2020 with 997 books on my TBR pile.

Books removed from TBR

Read and Reading
  1. December 31st, 2019: Oathbreaker by Martin Jensen - £1.00 - 5/5 - 233pp
Another splendid murder mystery set in the days of King Cnut
  2. January 2nd: Grantville Gazette #87 edited by Bjorn Hasseler - £3.61 - 4/5 - 165pp
The non-Grantville story was fun, but the rest were shorter and didn't grab me as much as usual. The 'fact' articles I just skimmed as usual.
  3. January 3rd: F&SF, January/February 2020 edited by C. C. Finlay - £5.00 - 5/5 - 246pp
    Another excellent selection of stories.
  4. January 6th: Words of Radiance by Brandon Sanderson - £1.99 - - 1121pp
  5. January 10th: Detection Unlimited by Georgette Heyer - £1.20 - 4/5 - 340pp
A Good mystery, although it wrapped up a bit too quickly for my taste.
  6. January 19th: Through Fiery Trials by David Weber - £4.88 - - 849pp

Books added to TBR

Freebies
  1. January 10th: Greylady by Peter Morwood (previously read)

Second!

I'm not sure exactly my 2020 goals just yet, but I would like to read all the 2020 selections for the Lit Club.

I'm carrying forward two goals as while I hit my marks in 2019, I'm still enjoying them. Three history goals altogether: Germany from the end of the Great War to the end of WWII; a shift in emphasis from Ancient Greek to Ancient Rome; and a new goal of Spanish history. Six books in each; I especially don't want to burn out on the repeated goals (and I may revisit them at the six-month point). I'll also track related literature in each category.

I set a benchmark of 120 books total each year, but I don't consider it a goal.

As ever, I link to my Goodreads shelves because I'm lazy.

120 books

Ancient Rome

Germany: Versailles to VE Day

Spain

I'm adding a goal of a poem-a-day.

06. 3/5 Ranger Confidential - Andria Lankford (audio) *
Good and bad of a practicing ranger in national park.
07. 2/5 Fire Burn & Cauldron Bubble - H P Mallory (audio) *
Disappointment after excellent first series.
08. 4/5 Jack of Spades - Carol Joyce Oates (audio) *
I had my doubts, but this turned to be a good psychological mystery.
09. 2/5 Toil and Trouble - H P Mallory (audio) *
Didn't like it. Author switched to mommie porn after 1st successful series.
10. 5/5 The Concrete Blonde - Michael Connelly (audio+ebook) *
This was excellent. A trial and serial killer keep you guessing.
11. 5/5 Blue On Black - Michael Connelly (audio) *
Short story - short but really good.
12. 2/5 Switchblade - Michael Connelly (audio) *
Short story - Story didn't jell for me. Bosch deals with a cold case.
13. 5/5 Magic Kingdom For Sale: Sold - Terry Brooks (audio-ebook) *
Kept my attention right through. Reread.
14. 3/5 Viva Durant & the Secret of the Silver Buttons (audio) * - Ashli St Armant
This was a good read - kids would enjoy this mystery, Free Audible Original
15.

My 2020 goal will be much lower than in the past years, due to new hobbies.

Book goal: 50 books
Page goal: 20000 pages

My reading list for 2020.
