Okay, I'll get on that. I've opened up some kind of online account a few months ago for Kindle 3 firmware that (at the time) wasn't available on Amazon's site. Now I've just got to figure where that is. I've got a good memory, but it's short. I'll PM you when I've found the link and uploaded the book.

I had to find the post to see exactly what I said. I should have used "characters" not "digits". So, it includes the "N" at the start.

I didn't understand any of your second paragraph, so will not attempt to update. It would be helpful to know, though, for future reference, which version of the H2O I have.

On the device in the directory ".kobo", there is a file called "affiliate.conf". This contains the company that is associated with your Kobo account. Usually this is related to how you first signed up and I assume they get a share of any books you buy from Kobo. Kobo control the firmware distribution based on this and some other things. They start with a few smaller, and possibly Canadian based affiliates, and gradually expand the distribution over a few weeks. Over the years, people have found which affiliate gets the firmware first, and geek1011 site uses these. If you edit the file above and change the affiliate to one of these, the device should update if there is firmware available.

That should actually be the recommended alternative to sideloading for this v2 devices for now. My fw downloader will show which affiliate received the latest version, and people could use that.

BTW, I improved (and rewrote) my fw downloader. See the new thread I started for the details.

I just added a new table to to my fw downloader to make this kind of thing easier. It shows which affiliates have the latest versions for each device. I've attached a screenshot of this table and another useful table I added.

Up to now, the modifications of the new F/W don't feel like improvements:

• the most annoying is the fact that it is not possible anymore to call the bottom menu through long pressing the page number zone. I keep trying and having to cycle through % and time left (tap and long press have the same effect), going to the top to call the menu, then back to bottom to use it. I've always preferred the third option for touch zones, but it doesn't work anymore the way it still shows in the parameters. So is this a bug?
• contrary to others I find it more difficult to call notes and to select a word (I'm speaking kepubs).
• I tried the speed page turning, and it is much too quick for me.

I noticed that the third panel in the book details disappeared, and a few differences in the dictionaries list: I have 15, and used to have to scroll on the One, not any more, the window fits them all. Also the order is different, starting with French (my language) instead of English, then English-French, then the single languages in alphabetical order, then the translation dictionaries in alphabetical order.

The third touchzones option seems to work well enough for me - to call the bottom menu you just need to tap directly on the page and slightly above the chapter/page info area (i.e. on the last 1/4 of the screen). You don't need to go all the way up to the top.

Thanks, it works, as long as you tap within the text. The whole white zone above the chapter area rotates through its options - and once, I must have tapped a bit too long, the definition of the word in the same position in the first line of the next page popped up.

• • This was commented on in the beta list. I'd say they put it at a low priority to fix, but I don't think anyone was using that touch zone, so it didn't really affect usage that much.

It isn't intended to be used for reading, but for quickly finding another page. And the speed can be changed. You start it by holding finger down one of the the bottom corners, and if you drag your finger across the bottom, it slows down. Near the middle it will pause, and go to the other side, and the page turn goes in the other direction.

You mean the "Related" tab? If so, this will display but only for purchased books. It has never been useful for sideloaded books.

Well I'm using it all the time, and at least Mathil uses it too, and gave me a way around.

It did work for sideloaded books, with Kobo utilities' set related books. I used to apply it first for authors, then for series, but I can use the search engine. It was just a way to look from a book when I was at the end, and open directly another from the same author or series.

I thought that stopped working a long time. But, I haven't tried it recently.

I have noticed that the usb issue does not seem to be happening so far with this version, and the touchscreen inaccuracies towards the right edge on the aura ed2 seem to have been fixed. There is also a new option to enable and disable some sort of tracking at the end of the energy and power settings (but I haven't tried it).

I use the custom footer patch and it's working fine for me. It might depend on how small you actually make the footer though. I use the patch's default footer height and font size values for my device (Kobo Glo HD), with a -15px for the top margin value.
By the way, @davidfor thanks for the page flipping tips! I hadn't figured out that sliding your finger makes it go faster/slower. Also, as @anacreon reported, there is a workaround in the sense that the touchzone for the reading menu is bigger than the footer, so it is still possible to tap on the page just above it and open the menu. I'm not sure if the new behaviour is a bug or a feature though.
