Shortcuts or hotkeys

I would like to be able to type in a letter and have Calibre scroll down to the first file in whatever column I have it sorted by. For example, if I have it sorted in ascending order by author and I type in "J", I want it to jump right down to the J authors. Similarly, if I have my library sorted by title, tag, etc, typing in the first letter would jump down to the corresponding titles, tags, etc.

There are some letters where it seems to do that but many others bring up some associated feature instead (e.g. S brings up a Save menu, T = edit, D = delivers to device). I'd like to see those features instead use a CTRL+___ shortcut.

I tried searching the forum to see if this topic has already come up but didn't find anything. Can anyone help or point me to an existing thread?

I figured out how to change/remove the keyboard shortcuts to specific features but still can't get it to jump down to the corresponding letter in the library. Is there a way?

@esrm - FWIW I would prefer that calibre not do any jumps down the booklist. When I press the 'wrong' key and it does jump my reaction is invariably WTF!

Try posting a request in Plugin ideas... add yours here for a PI that pops an 'A-Z' selector bar and operates on current primary sort column - it would probably have to ignore date, number, long text, and template derived columns.
