Hmmm ... the rounded pebbles would seem to imply a waterproof reader again. Button on back and that particular patterning don't directly resemble any of the previous devices I know (haven't seen the Glo HD or Aura in person though).

All my Kobos have the power button somewhere along the top edge. On the back would be new, I think.

It looks like a push button as well - most (all?) of the previous Kobos have had a slider power switch.

Does their #openupkobo hashtag tell us anything except that their marketing team is not dead?

As an aside, mid-August would make this a perfect birthday present for me ;-)

Not the H2O, which again would again imply that this one's waterproof, possibly an H2O replacement like the H2O was an Aura HD replacement.

August is great news, much sooner than I thought. That said, I'm unsure about that styling. The baby blue button in particular is a strange addition.

On the back would also make cases or covers rather awkward, unless they were just a screen cover that fitted to one side of the device like a hinge. A bit like the old Palm Vx's cover?

I would not say this is an H2O replacement. It's a different size. 7.8" is not the same as 6.8" and that means both can live together in the shop.

Yes, August is sooner than expected. We were thinking October.

Or up the top at the back, a cover can have a cut-out for the button.

I wonder whether the device is built to be used without a case? That grippy back looks inviting to the hand.

I hope it's not built to be used coverless. That would mean even more broken screens. Then we'd get more people coming on here saying Kobo sucks because the device is built too fragile. No thanks. We've had enough of that from people who don't research eInk, break the screen and complain Kobo sucks.

By "built to be used coverless", I means "offers the internal protection against screen damage that a modest external case might otherwise supply".

How do you think such could be built to offer screen protection like that?

Both the H2O and the GloHD have push buttons rather than sliders. Maybe sliders have gone the way of the dodo ...

And possibly a charging cover, to compete with Amazon.

Isn't speculation fun! In the recent past I don't think Kobo have been bringing out models which try to replicate Kindle features. They seem to have been picking features which Amazon have shown no interest in, e.g. screen-size choice, excellent control of text appearance, waterproofing.

Personally I think they'd be doomed if they try to make Kindle lookalikes. It's always going to be easier/safer to buy from Amazon if there are no Kobo-specific benefits.

I'd say it'll be a H2O+: watertight, dusttight and rugged!

The hashtag is just Kobo's new marketing slogan, I forget when it first popped up, but it was before news of this device was around.

Not loving the pebbled look, but it'll depend on what it's made of which seems to be a more rubberish material which is good. The power button is a bit garish, I love my H2O because it's elegant and doesn't draw attention to itself. But that square blue button...
