PW2 Sqeezing bezel cause page turn
I just got my mom a Paperwhite and she complains that sometimes the page will turn without touching the screen. We discovered that it comes from squeezing the left side of the bezel. The right side seems to not have this issue.
When she's holding it in her left hand on the side, it will randomly turn back a page. This happens mostly when she's drowsy. She's not very strong, yet it happens often enough to be annoying. She doesn't accidentally touch the screen, though. It has to be squeezed fairly hard to get it to do it, at least on command. So far, when I squeeze the bezel I can't get it to do it consistently. I've tried this on my PW2 and it does the same thing, only it seems much harder to get it to do it. I probably grip mine more firmly when I'm using it, yet I've never had this problem while reading. Anyone else noticed this problem? |

Just tried squeezing the bezel on mine and it does nothing (it does make a creaking noise on the left side of it though, so I'm not keen to squeeze it too hard!). In saying that, if you have tried it on your Mum's PW and can only replicate a page turn by squeezing it pretty hard and only sometimes, it sounds more likely that she is accidentally brushing the screen with her thumb/finger while holding it. I just tried it out and if your thumb is anywhere near the edge of the bezel, it does only take a very light touch with part of your thumb to turn a page.
Why not give her your PW to try, if the same thing happens with it, its clearly an accidental page turn and nothing wrong with the PW? Edited to add: Otherwise, I'm sure if you contact Amazon they'd replace it for you. Last edited by soulfuldog; 01-23-2015 at 06:50 AM. |

I'm in agreement with soulfuldog...especially if it's happening when she's drowsy. Sometimes when I've nodded off to sleep for a few minutes while reading, I'll come awake and notice that I'm either farther ahead or behind in the book than I should be.

Well, I've watched her reproduce it and can tell she's not pressing very hard nor making contact with the screen. On mine, I have to press/squeeze close to the inner edge of the bezels. She can produce a page turn by squeezing in the middle of the bezel.

If you're pressing on the inner edge of the bezel, then part of your finger is touching the screen. And that's what causes the page to turn.
To turn pages you can either touch the screen or swipe it. Didn't you read the guide that came with the device? ![]() |

Sounds like some kind of short. If it was me, I would look into getting the PW replaced. I'm guessing it will get worse. |

Before returning the reader as defective I'd be absolutely certain first that it's not a case of her thumb or finger slightly being over the edge of the frame. When I was trying to press around the edges to see if I could trigger a page turn, it finally did but I realized that my thumb was every so slightly touching the screen. Barely touching, but that's all it takes to do a page turn. And especially if it happens while she's starting to fall asleep and getting drowsy, it's very easy to touch the screen and not be aware of it.

And as I stated in my previous post, she can reproduce the issue, fairly reliably, by pressing the middle of the bezel, not just the inner edge. |

I could swear that this same thing is happening with my Paperwhite - and only on the left side, too. I am quite sure I am not touching the screen at all when this occurs. But...when I actually try to get the page to turn by deliberately pressing on the left hand bezel, nothing seems to happen. As Ripplinger suggested, it must indeed be "very easy to touch the screen and not be aware of it...."

In that case, if you are certain there's absolutely no accidental touch on the screen, I'd contact Amazon, explain the issue and hopefully they will send you out a replacement.

I have the same issue with my Paperwhite II - more than gentle touch on the left bezel at 1/3 of device height, close to screen, changes the page backwards.
I'ts not a big problem though I changed a page accidentally a few times. I didn't thought of asking for replacement. |

For what it's worth I have a Koba Aura with the exact same problem. If I press the bezel anywhere around the middle of the bottom pages start turning until I release the pressure. It takes more pressure to do this than I would normally apply while holding it but if I hold just the bottom that takes more pressure since it's off balance and that'll do it every time. So I just can't hold it that way.
When this happens no part of my finger is anywhere near the screen. I also have a Kobo Mini and it doesn't do that, ever. I do most of my reading with my Paperwhite and it never does that. I can hold it any way I want to, anywhere I want to and no problems. My guess is this is a defective Paperwhite and if you don't quickly find out otherwise I'd give Kindle CS a call. Barry |

For me it must be user error, since I can't get this "unexpected page turning" to duplicate. I have pressed much harder on the left hand bezel than I feel comfortable doing and the page won't turn, so when the page suddenly turns back seemingly on its own, I must have inadvertently touched the screen, even when I didn't think I had. Guess I need to be more self-aware!
