Disappearing Books
About 10% of my books disappeared. All the metadata remains, while covers I downloaded are present, but those that were extracted from the books are absent. The books seem to be completely random and of various formats. I have not e-mailed them, saved them, or sent them to my device. I discovered the missing formats and covers after Library Maintenance Check. This is the second time this happens. I am putting books back in one by one from a backup, but I have no idea what to do to prevent this from happening again.

@madeleinelevy - which operating system, and did you look in the rubbish/recycle/trash ?
All I can suggest for the moment is frequent Library Maintenance Checks and if OK an immediate backup - but I have a feeling you're already doing that BR |

Similar things can happen if the library is stored on a NAS (networked disc).

... or if the files are accessed using different operating systems. For instance if the library is on a portable drive and used from alternating Windows and Linux.
It is possible that the books are still in the calibre library, but in folders that have slightly different names from what calibre expects. Typically differing in use of lower/upper case only. The books are in "orphaned" folders. The cause is that different operating systems have different case sensitivity. Last edited by Adoby; 06-28-2014 at 07:36 AM. |

What Adoby said about file systems causing issues.
But... It gets worse you can end up with 2 copies of the SAME format eg Book_title.epub book_title.EPUB Windows can't deal with those and thinks you have only 1 file. A clue that you DO have this issue is when you BACKUP (Copy) your library folder (in Windows) to a Blank folder and you get 'File exists' warnings. |

Calibre doesn't delete random books. It has to be some other reason that you haven't mentioned yet. We can only speculate. For instance backup or cloud sync software that is active and working while calibre is running?
Or partial backup restore into an existing calibre library structure, instead of first deleting the whole library and then restoring all of it from backup. Or restoring to a new place. Since the database expect books in certain folders, restoring folders without restoring the database, or the database without the folders, will cause havoc. Seemingly random havoc since some folders may be OK but others are not. Last edited by Adoby; 06-30-2014 at 05:06 AM. |

Isn't there a send option feature: send to device, Delete after send.
(it is on the send menu, but I don't know if that can be made 'the default action' |

Backing-up is done on Time Capsule and manually on external drive.
No restores were done. None of these books were sent to device. |

Did you use any syncing programs while calibre was running?

Time capsule would probably be running in the background sometimes, while Calibre was open.
