Does this mean that I should NOT tell you about the wolf spiders that reside in my humble abode, nor the two tarantulas that reside near/at/under it?
I should like to introduce you to a) Hairy Potter, and b) Quentin Tarantoola. They live "with" us. Hairy lives by the garage, and, by the way, guards it vociferously. He (? on gender) once got into a real pissing contest with Mr. Hitch, and CHARGED him. No, I'm not making that up. Quentin is a bit mellower. S/he lives under the front porch. Those are two-inch wide blind slats, fyi. And truly--they are NUTHIN' compared to the endless parade of scorpions that come through here. The best thing about scorpions are that they are easy to kill, but lord, they are FAST skitterers. FAST. (And we have cats!). Yes, I've been stung. Yes, it SUCKS. Hitch |

I like jumping spiders. I used to take them inside the house whenever I saw them but my wife never warmed to them so I quit. They're great for pest control, however. My sisters in Florida tell me it's common down there for residents to keep certain species of spiders around for pest control. For the longest time we had a jumping spider living in our mailbox. Our daughter, who was a child at the time, named it "Jumpy." |

Oh my goodness Hitch I would really find those to be very cool (like if it were in a TV stint or something. Or if people would make funny voice dubbing)
I'm not totally scared of them as long as I'm prepared for the encounter though. It's when they make a surprise appearance inches from my face that would really rattle me. |

Back in the 90s a couple who were friends with my wife moved into our town. He was on a two year rotation with his company so they didn't buy a house, they leased a very nice condo and turned the second bedroom into an entertainment room. They had a VCR and a nice projection television. They invited us over for a movie, and I brought a VHS of Arachnophobia.
The couple let us have the two chairs opposite the TV and they sat on the floor, between us and the TV. Between those two chairs there was a small table with a pop-up box of tissues. They lowered the lights (aside from being necessary for good viewing of a projection image, it also set the mood) and we started watching the movie -- which I love. At one of the creepiest scenes, while a spider is stalking an unsuspecting victim ... I reached over, crumpled up a tissue, and tossed it onto our hostess' arm -- where it quickly skittered down to the floor. Screams and hilarity ensued. |

Hi, guys:
@WT: yes, Wolf spiders are fabulous for pest control. But they do get VERY large, and it can be a bit unnerving. They sleep during the day, so on occasion, I can look up (we have 12-14-ft. high ceilings in most rooms) and see one tucked up in its "hammock," against the ceiling/wall intersection, and see it dozing. That's one thing, but I do try not to think about one coming down and crawling around the bedroom at night, admittedly. @Lin: they are pretty cool, although Hairy really IS very grouchy. And the charged-Mr.-Hitch thing--it was hilarious. Mr. Hitch was trying to GENTLY move Hairy away from the (open) garage door, so that Hairy wouldn't get inside and then die, as there's no food/water in there for him/her. And Hairy just didn't take that well, and ran right AT him, his two front "legs" upraised. Honest to crap, I wish I had video of it! @cromag: I likely would have screamed, right before I beat the holy s**t out of you!!! ;-) Hitch |

@Hitch - several years ago we had a super-sized wolf spider set up her hammock on our front porch - that spanned the door jamb - which was OK since we rarely use that door - when we walked up the sidewalk to the front steps to look at her she charged us - racing down the steps w/her 2 front legs waving in the air - we retreated hastily. Her body alone was 3-4" long!
