P.S.: when I had to babysit my MUCH younger sibs, I worshipped at the feet of Romper Room. I thought that woman was a goddess, the way she could mesmerize those kids. ;-0

Hey I just managed to evict the roommate from Hell who did all that and put garbage in the freezer, hoarded dishes in his room to avoid washing them, and moved out stealing a lot of small stuff that is probably no use to him. ho needs 100 hangars when living mostly out of a suitcase even if they are fancy hangars?

Guy is ADHD or sociopathic. Lucky for me he dreams small in the stealing line. 6 ugly pillows and one good one. A laundry hamper, some cheap crappy teaspoons I use to open jars with? Does he foresee a successful career move into the jar opening trade.

Oh well a life experience.

Good to get rid of him, at a very small cost.

Not at all. I forgot to mention whiskers from shaving all over the bathroom and a personal pet peeve of mine, toothpaste droppings spread everywhere. Like having the peppermint pigeon with whiskers instead of feathers.

When you make goals and not reach them? That's incredibly frustrating. But what frustrates me is if other people are also included in such frustration. Like, people in general, or family members, would encourage you to reach your goal and at the same time exhibit a look of disappointment if you won't be able to reach them?

I don't know... that's just like, living up to something that doesn't quite add up to be a necessary part of life.

"Unreal Expectations." The bane of the upper-middle class teenager...
'We'll be sooo proud of you when you become a doctor, dear.'
But I don't want to be a doctor. I want to be a forest ranger.
'Don't be silly, dear. How would you be able to afford country club dues if you were a forest ranger. You'll be a doctor and a good one at that! And we'll be sooo proud of you.'

Today's vent/rant is that Stella Young died. She was an amazing, fierce, formidable woman and her far-too-early death is a great loss.

Oh meeera what a shock!! Wasn't she just the sassiest gal, so much get up and go .... and such an achiever.

I've attached one of my favourite pics of her. (And don't you just love those red and white polka dot shoes!!)

Vale Stella, your achievements were remarkable for such a short life.

A little bit about Stella for those who didn't know of her:
... Stella Young, who has died at the age of 32, campaigned with tireless determination on behalf of people with disability, including as editor of ABC Ramp-Up and as a frequent contributor to ABC The Drum.

Stella's articles did what only the best commentary can do - they startled you into a new way of looking at your world, and hers. She was strong, direct and insistent, but never lacking in wit, warmth and humanity.

Here is only a sample of what we learned from her.
Dying with dignity: let's focus more on the latter
Spoiler:

I am loathe to give doctors any more control over my life than they already have. In a context where disability is viewed as deficit, it's important that we do not lump disability and terminal illness into the same basket.

The wheel perspective

We are not, as we so often see written, "wheelchair bound". We are liberated by our chairs. They give us the freedom to be who we are, and we love them for it.

We need rights and respect, not charity

Allies should be strengthening the voice of people with disability by speaking up alongside us, not simulating disability in a tokenistic fashion and raising money for charities. We need rights and respect, not charity.

'Liveability' is more than coffee and cobbled lanes

It is nothing short of baffling to me how a city like Melbourne, where I struggle to find accessible facilities on a very regular basis, could be considered the most liveable city in the world.

It's hard to feel dignified in underpaid work

It is much easier to feel dignified when you're paid more than token pocket money that might not even cover your transport costs for the working week.

We're damned by discrimination, not the DSP

Making the DSP harder to get isn't going to "entice" people with disabilities into the workforce. We're already enticed. Some of us are desperate for opportunities to contribute and to earn a living.

A letter to my younger self

You get proud by practicing. This is possibly the most important thing anyone will ever tell you. The journey towards disability pride is long, and hard, and you have to practice every single day. From where I write to you now, at the age of 31, I have been practicing a long time, and I'm still not there. That's OK.

Estranger on a Train.

WE had a prospective client who wanted to know why we were "so much more" than BOOKBABY. I don't even know what to say to people like that, because a) much of what we do isn't immediately visible to the naked eye, and b)...shrug, it's a get-what-you-pay-for-scenario. Her book was a cookbook, with >100 images; they quoted something around $200, give or take. I can tell you EXACTLY what she'll get for that--crap. It'll be a quick-n-dirty Calibre conversion (maybe not using Calibre, but...that type of process).

And that wasn't the customer that caused the Marvin. That was the guy who insisted that his cover had to be "full-bleed." For his EBOOK. And repeatedly that I didn't UNDERSTAND the problem.

Not to mention client #3: 36 emails, and he hasn't signed the contract yet. This is for a book that's under $500. THIRTY-SIX, and all of them are +/`1,000-1500 words long, if not longer. Oh, and he complained that one of the screenshots of one of the images, on my website, of a completed ebook page, was "awful" because the omelet looked "fuzzy" on the edges. (The omelet has a shadow around it, and it's a screenshot of the book on Previewer, taken on a--you guessed it--regular old monitor screen). He told me he's "sensitive" to visual items. I forebore from saying I was "sensitive" to people who don't understand that an image of a 350ppi image on a 200+ppi screen, then viewed on a 72/96ppi monitor, MIGHT NOT look quite like what he was expecting.

{sigh} Please, Freya, Tyr, get me to midnight, December 24th, please.
