I don't know if the class attribute is needed (it's present in KePubs published by Kobo) but those spans and their id attributes are what Kobo uses to save your reading position (and probably anything else involving locations inside books).

And they explicitly don't have any style so that they don't change the layout of the book.

Actually, looking at a kepub from Kobo, the kobospan does have a style defined in each text file rather than in a stylesheet.

Admittedly, I'm not quite sure just what that bit of CSS means where it is used since the only other time I've seen -webkit-text-combine in the wild, it was used with horizontal to display horizontal elements in a vertical text column (arabic numbers in a vertical Japanese document for example).

The quick import could be because the first book failed to be processed correctly. That blocks the rest from being imported. And, if this was happening before, it might be a leftover from a previously sideloaded batch. Either Calibre or Windows explorer tell me that the books are definitely on the device. The synced ebooks end up on the Kobo and stay there forever or until I delete them using Calibre... They just can't be seen and browsed from the device itself.

Unfortunately I have to report that this problem of mine doesn't seem to be book-related or batch-related, because all these recent ebooks loaded just fine (except for the spacing issue) before the latest KTE update.
I have just tried to convert + sync newer books; to delete + re-sync ebooks converted months ago; and even to delete + re-convert + sync books that used to work in the past: none of the synced book can be seen from the device.

Could it be something just metadata-related or driver-related? I wish I could help you better than this, but I am not an expert of debugging Calibre and ereaders. I'm a noob even at using these things!

Am I the only one experiencing this issue, by any chance? If it's like that then I'll just factory reset my device...

Try the following and see if it works. Use kepubify to convert the ePub to KePub and then load the KePub onto your Kobo to see if it works. Use one of the ones you tried before that didn't work.

I am not experiencing this problem with my Kobo Forma. I just added a book to make sure the problem wasn't newly introduced with the new KTE driver or the latest version of Calibre (4.19), and the kepub showed up just fine on my device. Sorry I can't help.

@jxall: Are you seeing the "Processing new content" screen when ejecting your device after sending new books?

The system logs should shed some light on what the Kobo thinks is happening (in particular, the content import process). Search for devmodeon before the whole process, then plug it back on after having sent some books, and check the system logs in the .kobo folder.

I believe that I've found at least two other tag-related bugs (similar to the recent issue) that haven't been discussed yet. Unneccessary tags are being added prior to some <a> and tags during EPUB to KEPUB conversion. I'll post example snippets below that illustrate a single paragraph, but can also provide scrambled EPUBs if necessary.

I'm running Calibre v4.19 and the latest plugin version (KTE v3.2.11). Each has been present since at least KTE v3.2.7. If it matters, the formatting appears correct when testing the conversion with kepubify.

Always check before you make some statement.

But, then I check. The three books I looked at didn't have the above statement. And one didn't have the class in the spans. They were just:

I am having the same issue as jxall on two separate Clara HDs. Converting with kepubify and sideloading manually, bypassing Calibre altogether, does let the book be readable on the device.

I ran some tests using Kepubify and this is what I got:

conversion using Kepubify + copy/paste to Kobo main folder: Kobo sees the ebook (just like @thatbend says)
conversion using Kepubify + manual editing of the file extension to prevent unneeded auto-conversion in Calibre (edited from .kepub.epub to just .kepub) + added the .kepub to Calibre library + synced the .kepub to Kobo (without re-converting anything): Kobo doesn't see the ebook

As I suspected, the problem doesn't have anything to do with the conversion itself, but most likely with the way metadata is managed or sent from Calibre to the device.

Yes, I always get the processing screen but it is always suspiciously fast (it lasts 3 seconds maximum) - no matter if I sync 1 ebook or 50 ebooks.

Can you post a scrambled ePub, a scrambled copy of the converted KePub, and the calibre debug log containing only converting the book?

If it's metadata it may not be this driver. Can you do a few things:

Remove all problematic books from the device
Restart calibre in debug mode
Send one single problematic book to the Kobo, then close calibre (to get the debug log) and restart it normally
Attach a scrambled copy of the book and the calibre debug log
