Max Brand (Frederick Schiller Faust, 1892-1944) not only wrote many westerns and several crime novels, he also created Dr Kildare, which became a movie franchise and later a TV series.

"Destry Rides Again" tells of Harrison Destry, who is framed and imprisoned for a robbery he did not commit. Out of jail, he sets out to find and punish those who lied him into jail.

The various "Destry" movies, with Tom Mix, James Stewart and Audie Murphy as Destry, bear little or no relation to the book, and even change Destry's first name to Tom. There was a Broadway musical, and a TV series starring John Gavin, which ran only one season.

It is one of the best-selling westerns, never out of print.
