BTW, I downloaded all James Bond ePubs by Ian Fleming these days. I don't feel any guilt at all: he's been long dead, his son died and so has his wife. Whose greasy executive pocket I'd be filling otherwise?

I'm all for paying a living author his fair share for his loveable works, but I truly feel like giving the finger to people who buy a copyright and behave like they are now the author and deserve to be fed for free until the copyright expires (or never as abstract immortal people like companies are eager to lobby for).

Public domain books scanned by volunteers are likely to have some errors. You could always help out by proofreading as you read the books, if you want. Myself, if there aren't too many errors, I overlook them.

I wonder if OCR will improve, some don't work well at all. I've been working on converting a PDF scan of an old book, but it has been slow going. The OCR program I use (I use a free web-based OCR) handles it very poorly. Plus, the book is in an old format, with two columns, so for the text that does scan correctly, I have to go by hand to separate the lines of text.

To volunteer as a public domain book proofreader, check out:

Distributed Proofreaders

They make it easy to get started, although I find it hard work, and haven't done a lot. Much thanks to those who have done more.
