Nook Store Vs. Kindle Store

Hi,

I'm considering a Nook Glow Light or a Kindle Touch. Which store has better selection and prices -- the Nook Store or Kindle Store?

In addition to the store consideration, a main concern is whether B&N will continue supporting the Nook in the future. However, its latest partnership with Microsoft hopefully means a long-term commitment to the Nook brand.

Thank you!

I think I have bought more books from Amazon than I ever did at B&N when I had my Nooks. Amazon just had so many more of the kinds of books I wanted at cheaper prices. Also it seems Amazon makes it so much easier to buy books with the great lists of suggested reading. BUT that may be changing. So I would say go with the reader & store you find the most comfortable to read with & has they types of books you like reading.

It's good to remember that the Nook will work with ePubs from any store except Apple. Go to www.inkmesh.com for a quick and easy way to look for authors and titles across online bookstores.

With a tiny bit of effort, you can also strip the DRM and convert a book from any of the stores, except Apple, into a format that will work on your reader. I'd be more focused on which reader is best for your needs

Something called Requiem can help with that. Or so I've been told.

Well, I think it is pretty clear at this point that for B&N, Nook is their main play to stay relevant in the near future so I wouldn't worry too much about B&N continuing to support it.

As for selection and prices... At least at the moment, when we are talking about mainstream publishers, the two should be comparable. Amazon probably has a much better selection of independent authors because of their very generous terms for indie publishers.

Personally I buy from B&N... in part because it is the one store that doesn't tie your books to your device.

Neither does Sony or Kobo.

That's simply not true, Bill. No ePub store that uses Adobe DRM "ties your books to your device".

So the encryption used is not specific to the device in question? If I download an Adobe DRM book to my smartphone (for example), I can simply side load it my Sony PRS-650 assuming it is authorized to the same account?

Yes; absolutely right. ADE DRM is specific to the ADE account, not the device. You can read your book on any device or app that's registered to the same ADE Account.

To be honest, they both are pretty close. With Amazon having a minor advantage on some areas or topics, plus is International.

I always suggest this to people: pick 5 titles you want, 5 you like and have and check on each store. The more hits and better prices, give you a good indicator of which ereader is best for your reading preferences.

I mainly read SQL books. Amazon is a winner there. My titles are rare or difficult to find in Nook store plus Nook devices (eink) lack of landscape mode, which I need when reading programming code.

Hope that helps.

What is B&N's return policy? Amazon allow you to return any eBook within 7 days of purchase for a full refund.

None: B&N returns policy

Once you downloaded the Nook book, you're pretty much stuck with it. Now, to be fair and if I recall well, I think that you can read those for free for about an hour, if you're in the store location.

Amazon? ... well, you know it. I've returned like 4 or 5 ebooks because didn't like them or typo issues. Zero questions, got my money back same or next day.
