Karl von Holtei (1798 - 1880) war ein deutscher Schriftsteller, Schauspieler, Rezitator, Theaterregisseur und Theaterleiter. Er hat neben seiner Tätigkeit als Dramatiker eine Reihe von umfangreichen Romanen und zahlreiche Novellen verfasst, letztere gerne mit kriminalistischem Kern.
Über "Schwarzwaldau" urteilte Arno Schmidt, dies sei "der beste deutsche Kriminalroman". Vor der Kulisse eines biedermeierlichen Landguts entwickelt Carl von Holtei in seinem Psychokrimi eine sich furios entwickelnde Studie über Leidenschaften.
