Change font in O'Reilly Learning app?

I have an Onyx Boox Note, and installed O'Reilly Learning app which allows me to read many programming books on the Safari Books Online.

The app works mostly fine, with a few annoyances. The top one is that all the book text is in bold (even though the app text is not), and the O'Reilly app doesn't expose a setting to change the font style.

I'm wondering if there is any hack that allows overriding the font style of the app?

Thanks!

Hi bokertov, I am considering getting a boox for O'Reilly learning. Would you mind post a few photos of your device with the O'Reilly Learning app?

I used "WhatTheFont" app, and found it using "Droid Serif Pro WGL Bold" on Onyx Boox Note, while "Droid Serif Pro WGL Regular" on my Pixel Android phone.

O'Reilly customer support mentioned that the app is simply using system's default font.

There is this section in etc/fonts.xml, which is the same for Onyx Boox Note and Pixel phone
Code:
<family name="serif">
        <font weight="400" style="normal">NotoSerif-Regular.ttf</font>
        <font weight="700" style="normal">NotoSerif-Bold.ttf</font>
        <font weight="400" style="italic">NotoSerif-Italic.ttf</font>
        <font weight="700" style="italic">NotoSerif-BoldItalic.ttf</font>
    </family>
Onyx Boox Note might indeed be using the NotoSerif-Bold font (which was also recognized by WhatTheFont as "Droid Serif Pro WGL Bold").

I don't know why O'Reilly app chose to use the bold version of the font on the Onyx Boox Note, and regular version on the Pixel phone. I'm wondering if it has something to do with the weight.

I tried to modify fonts.xml but wasn't able to, possibly because the device isn't rooted.

The root cause might be this:
http://bbs.onyx-international.com/t/...overdrive/1933,
where someone has similar issue on other 3rd party apps.

It seems to be a bug on the Onyx side.

Good morning, BokerTov

As I also bought the Max 3 to use Oreilly I wonder - Why access Oreilly through the application and not through the browser?

Hi

The O'Reilly app allows downloading the books for offline reading. Somehow my Onyx Boox Note battery level drops pretty fast when WiFi is on, but can last many days otherwise. So I only turn on the WiFi when necessary.

Thanks for the photo. Just curious, does boox allow hand written annotation on 3rd party apps like O'Reilly Learning?

O'Reilly app doesn't support hand-writing annotation. You can only type the notes using keyboard.

I found a solution.

First, go to Apps, then hold the icon of O'Reilly app. A menu will pop out with option "Optimize"

Second, go to tab "Other", unselect option "Webpage font bold".

Enjoy the normal font now
