The second book in the series is also on sale for $3.

Went to Kobo to get it. Price shown as free. Wen to check out, and they wanted to charge me for it.

Said to myself: The hell with that!

Went to Amazon and got it.

I'm a regular VIP member, but I didn't want to step into any cow piles. And I'm not as nimble as I used to be.

BUT: Thank you for the heads up. Got it from Amazon.

Kobo worked for me too. Free book doesn't even go into the cart. It just gets added to your books.

There's an error in the description. it reads...

Seanan McGuire introduces readers to a world of talking trees

It was actually J.R.R. Tolkien who introduced us to talking trees.

There were talking trees in The Wizard of Oz. (The film: I have no idea about the book[s].)

Seanan McGuire introduces us to a world which has talking trees, not talking trees in general.

Well, according to @Dr. Dib, we were introduced to a world with talking trees by Frank L. Baum.

That was Oz. This is the Up-and-Under which I suppose is first introduced in Middlegame. (This book is a book within that book.) So you're right there is an error. :P

It was the movie The Wizard of Oz (1939) that had talking trees; in the book the trees (not apple) were sentient guardians of the enchanted forest, but they while they could move their limbs and see and hear, they couldn't talk.

Many tweaks in the film, including the ruby slippers which were silver in the book.

Supposedly they were made ruby because they showed up better on camera with that color.

Hot take: The Wizard of Oz is a case where the film is better than the book.

Mickey7 and Antimatter Blues are the 1st and 2nd books in the Mickey7 series by Edward Ashton. They are on sale by the publisher. Both are £1.70. Mickey7 is going to be a movie.

Mickey7
Quote:
Dying isn’t any fun…but at least it’s a living.

Mickey7 is an Expendable: a disposable employee on a human
expedition sent to colonize the ice world Niflheim. Whenever there’s a mission
that’s too dangerous—even suicidal— the crew turns to Mickey. After one
iteration dies, a new body is regenerated with most of his memories intact.
Mickey signed on to escape from both bad debts and boredom on Midgard.

After six deaths, Mickey7 understands the terms of his
deal…and why it was the only colonial position unfilled when he took it.

When he goes missing and is presumed dead at the hands of
deadly indigenous creatures, Mickey8 reports for duty, and their troubles
really begin.

Antimatter Blues
Quote:
Summer has come to Niflheim. The lichens are growing, the six-winged bat-things are chirping, and much to his own surprise, Mickey Barnes is still alive—that last part thanks almost entirely to the fact that Commander Marshall believes that the colony’s creeper neighbors are holding an antimatter bomb, and that Mickey is the only one who’s keeping them from using it. Mickey’s just another colonist now. Instead of cleaning out the reactor core, he spends his time these days cleaning out the rabbit hutches. It’s not a bad life.

It’s not going to last.

It may be sunny now, but winter is coming. The antimatter that fuels the colony is running low, and Marshall wants his bomb back. If Mickey agrees to retrieve it, he’ll be giving up the only thing that’s kept his head off of the chopping block. If he refuses, he might doom the entire colony. Meanwhile, the creepers have their own worries, and they’re not going to surrender the bomb without getting something in return. Once again, Mickey finds the fate of two species resting in his hands. If something goes wrong this time, though, he won’t be coming back.

The Butcher of the Forest by Premee Mohamed is $1.99. Novella

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C1X7W5B2...v_ov_lig_dp_it

Quote:
At the northern edge of a land ruled by a merciless foreign tyrant lies a wild, forbidden forest ruled by powerful magic.

Veris Thorn—the only one to ever enter the forest and survive—is forced to go back inside to retrieve the tyrant's missing children. Inside await traps and trickery, ancient monsters, and hauntings of the past.

One day is all Veris is afforded. One misstep will cost everything.
