In case you missed SoundQuest Fest when it was broadcast live on Youtube you still have a few chances to catch up. Most (all?) of the performances are available on Youtube for viewing. Many (most?) have also been packaged for download and are also available on most streaming services. And many are available for download. One that I particularly liked has been packaged as an album by the Spotted Peccary label: Precipice of a Dream (Live from SoundQuest Fest 2021) by Howard Givens, Madhavi Devi, Craig Padilla is available at Bandcamp for "Name your own price" (FREE is an acceptable option). This is a 45 minute Ambient performance broken into 7 tracks. I really like it!

Amazon Music HD For All, Now at No Extra Cost

Quote:
Subscribers to Amazon Music Unlimited can now upgrade to the highest quality streaming audio available, for free

Amazon Music HD gives listeners unlimited access to more than 70 million songs in High Definition (HD) audio, more than 7 million songs in Ultra HD, the highest-quality streaming audio available, and a rapidly-growing catalog of 3D Audio, including songs mixed in Dolby Atmos and Sony 360RA
Quote:
SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 17, 2021-- (NASDAQ: AMZN) ) Amazon Music today announced that going forward, its high-quality streaming tier, Amazon Music HD, will be available to all eligible Amazon Music Unlimited subscribers at no extra cost, unlocking access to the highest-quality streaming audio for even more music fans. In 2019, Neil Young called the launch of HD audio for Amazon “the biggest thing to happen in music since the introduction of digital audio” and now, even more fans can stream music with all of the depth, vibrancy, and emotion from artists’ original recordings. Learn more about Amazon Music HD here.

“When we first launched Amazon Music HD, our goal was to lead the industry by enabling music fans around the world to stream the best quality recording, the way artists intended their music to be heard,” said Steve Boom, VP of Amazon Music. “We’re thrilled now to make Amazon Music HD available to everyone at no extra cost. All music fans should have access to this quality of music, and now they do!”

With Amazon Music HD, customers can stream more than 70 million lossless, High Definition (HD) songs, with a bit depth of 16 bits and a sample rate of 44.1kHz (CD quality).

Customers can also stream more than 7 million songs in Ultra HD (better than CD quality), with a bit depth of 24 bits and a sample rate up to 192 kHz, which reveals even more nuances that were once flattened in files compressed for digital streaming. Amazon Music HD has added more than 5 million songs to its Ultra HD catalog since its 2019 launch, providing customers with the largest selection of music in Ultra HD. With Amazon Music HD, customers also have access to a rapidly-growing catalog of songs remixed in 3D Audio formats such as Dolby Atmos and Sony 360RA. Listeners can stream these 3D mixes when listening on Amazon’s groundbreaking high-fidelity smart speaker, Echo Studio. Music in 360RA can also be streamed via Amazon Music HD on Sony’s RA5000 and RA3000 speakers by using Alexa Cast.

New and existing subscribers to the Amazon Music Unlimited Individual Plan, at $7.99/month for Prime members and $9.99/month for Amazon customers, or the Family Plan, at $14.99/month, can now easily upgrade to Amazon Music HD at no extra cost. The Amazon Music HD tier was previously an additional $5/month for current subscribers to the Individual or Family Plan. For current subscribers to Amazon Music HD, there will be no extra charge for HD starting with their next billing cycle.

Subscribers to Amazon Music Unlimited can now upgrade to Amazon Music HD at no extra cost in the US, UK, Germany, Canada, France, Italy, and Spain. Learn more here.

Erik Wøllo is the latest artist to offer his performance at Soundquest Fest 2021 as a free 320kbps MP3 download at Bandcamp. You get eight individual tracks and/or a ninth track consisting of the entire, one hour long performance as a gapless track. The album is listed as name-your-own-price, but Free is acceptable.

Spotify Is Testing a New Super-Cheap Subscription Plan, but It Comes With Ads

Quote:
In an effort to expanding its offerings and potentially give customers more flexible pricing, Spotify has begun testing out a new super-cheap subscription that starts at just $0.99 a month.

Positioned just above the basic free tier, Spotify Plus represents a significant cost saving over Spotify’s existing $10-a-month Premium plan and includes perks like no track or skip limits and the freedom to listen to specific songs at will instead of being limited to playlists. However, the downside is that in exchange for that super affordable pricing, you’ll have to listen to ads.

While Spotify Plus is not yet widely available, Spotify has begun testing its new subscription in the wild as spotted by a reader who sent screenshots of the new trial offers to the Verge. After the new Spotify Plus plan was discovered, Spotify later confirmed that the company was testing out new plays in a statement saying “We’re always working to enhance the Spotify experience and we routinely conduct tests to inform our decisions. We’re currently conducting a test of an ad-supported subscription plan with a limited number of our users.”

That seems like a really good idea for them, as it lets someone test out the full version at a much cheaper rate. I always thought the idea of Spotify was stupid, then I got two months & a free Google Home Mini for ~$5 and tried it out while I had it. I've remained subscribed ever since, because it turns out it works better for me than maintaining my own music library did.

They certainly got their money's worth out of that Home Mini.

So if Amazon gets them so hooked they don't ever graduate, can they keep the student rate forever? Yeah, yeah, I know it says up to 1 year, but...

I know you’re being facetious, but my understanding is that Amazon kicks you off student prime after four years, diploma or none (and grad school notwithstanding, too).

But I could easily be wrong about this, too.
