Brown, Alice: The County Road. v1. 09 Jun 2022

Thirteen delightful stories of life in rural New England, filled with vivid human interest, and lightly laced with humor.

“The stories that make this volume are excellent reading. Most of them are set in the kitchens and dooryards of New England houses; nearly all are enveloped in the young green of the spring; and every one deals with a human predicament.”

(—The Nation, 18 Oct 1906)

============
Alice Brown (December 5, 1856 – June 21, 1948) was an American novelist, short-story writer, poet, and playwright. She was one of the last authors of New England local color, a movement which began with Rose Terry Cooke and Harriet Beecher Stowe and reached its highest popularity during the careers of Mary E. Wilkins Freeman and Sarah Orne Jewett. Her popular New England tales were mostly published from 1895 to 1910. Her popularity waned after the turn of the 20th century, although she continued to publish until 1935.
