KPW1 needs repair. Code 2. Serial port fix.
Hello, my Kindle Paperwhite shows "Your Kindle needs repair. Repair Code 2".

It's out of warranty so Amazon won't help me.
I read I can put DO_FACTORY_RESTORE on kindle USB drive, but when I connect it to my PC the drive is ejected. I tried using script with loop to put file on this drive when rebooting it, but it's not working so this method won't help me :( .

I managed to connect to it with serial port. Output:

The answer depends ....

What actions prior to the "too many restarts" that you did might have triggered this state?
(Obviously, you have added a serial port.)

Is this device another one that you constructed from the parts of non-working devices?
Anything else, other than normal e-book reading?

I.E: There really might be a reason for the critical condition.
If so, then you would want to fix (or reverse) the cause before over-riding the protection(s).

The Repair Needed screen showed before I opened device.
At the beggining I tried holding power button for 30 sec but nothing changed (it rebooted, turned on LEDs, showed Repair Needed screen and turned LEDs off).
When I put magnet on a bezel (imitate magnetic case) it boots to screen saver. When I remove magnet it shows Repair Needed.

I didn't mess with the device before.
On the screen there is also

In this order, try:
  1. Try zeroing the restart counter
  2. Erase all in /var/local/*
  3. Try the do factory restore thing


#3 will also do #2 - so doing just #2 might save you from losing things in the USB user storage.

But...

It might be something in USB user storage causing the problem, in that case you may have to use #3.

OK, I zeroed restart counter, deleted /var/local/* and even put DO_FACTORY_RESTORE file on /mnt/us/

It just try to load 3 or 4 times and ends up on Repair Needed screen :(

When I did DO_FACTORY_RESTORE it asked me for language and later rebooted 3 or 4 times just like without DO_FACTORY_RESTORE.

I had some problems with serial connection, but whole restoring/reloading procedure repeated few times so log should be OK.

I also hid my SN and Board ID.

Any idea what should I do next? Should I upload some firmware and try to upgrade my Kindle?
