Edwards, Amelia B.: The Borders of Night (collected ghosts). v1. 31 Oct 2018

THE BORDERS OF NIGHT: Tales of the Supernatural by AMELIA B. EDWARDS (1831–1892)

From the pen of Amelia B. Edwards, now generally recognized as one of the best Victorian authors of ghost stories, sixteen stories of ghostly encounters and supernatural episodes, to bristle your hair and tingle your spine. She carries us along to strange destinations with richly descriptive prose, evoking time and place and atmosphere.

These stories are taken from Miss Carew (1865), Monsieur Maurice and Other Tales (1873), and a text found at eBooks@Adelaide.

Amelia Ann Blanford Edwards (7 June 1831 – 15 April 1892) was an English novelist, journalist, traveller and Egyptologist. She began to write at a young age, publishing her first poem at age 7 and her first story at 12. Her first novel, My Brother’s Wife, appeared in 1855, but it was Barbara’s History (1864), a novel about bigamy, that made her famous. She also wrote crime and ghost stories, including the much-anthologized "The Phantom Coach". Following the publication of her last novel, Lord Brackenbury (1880), which was a run-away success, she abandoned her other literary work to concentrate solely on Egyptology. Her travelogue, A Thousand Miles Up the Nile (1877), is possibly her best-known work.

The contents of this book were first published 1860 ~ 1881. Text is in the public domain worldwide, because the author died more than 100 years ago, and the works were published prior to 1923.

This is my own compilation. Texts were obtained from Project Gutenberg, Gutenberg Australia, and the Internet Archive; proofed against pdf scans of first editions. Obvious textual errors were silently corrected; punctuation, diacritics, and italics formatted. Typography follows the conventions of the British first editions. Story titles are cross-linked to table of contents. Embedded font used for titling.

The trail of the tingling spine...

A long overdue generic thanks for all your ghost story collectionsl

Not only have you pandered to my secret literary addiction, you kept my spine sufficiently chilled over the summer that I saved a bundle on air-conditioning!

Kudos for gathering them all and presenting them in your usual inimitable style.

Thank you so much for the compliments. I am glad you are enjoying the books.

(this is the Rabbit Hole --- there are SO MANY Victorian ghost stories out in the wild, just waiting to be snared!)
