WHO, if any, I wonder, knows the true history of Anthony Sorel and Anna Quartermaine? Do I really know it myself? Some of that which I heard was told me by an old woman up in the mountains near Clogheen. This was not so many miles from where they took Anthony Sorel, therefore I persuaded myself that she would be as likely as any to have the truth. Moreover there was something in the telling of it, something in the atmosphere that surrounded her in her lonely cottage on that wild mountainside—you must know well what I mean—which brought conviction to me.
