London, Jack: Sydhavet [Danish] v1. 14 May 2022

Jack London, født 12. januar 1876 San Francisco – død 22. november 1916, Glenn Ellen, Californien var en amerikansk forfatter og journalist, søn af Florence Wellmann og - muligvis - en journalist og sagfører mm. ved navn William Chaney. Moderen giftede sig senere i 1876 med en veteran fra den amerikanske borgerkrig, John London, som gav Jack sit efternavn. Født i fattige forhold, måtte han tidligt selv tjene til føden, og tilbragte nogle år nærmest som en vagabond med skiftende jobs på fabrikker og som sømand. En kort tid studerede han, men forsøgte sig så i stedet som guldgraver under den store "goldrush" i Alaska. Det var med alle disse erfaringer som grundlag, at han skabte sig en levevej som forfatter af romaner og noveller, især med historier fra Stillehavsøerne og om eskimoer og indianere højt mod nord, men også med dyrefortællinger som "Når naturen kalder" og "Ulvehunden".
