Donating to calibre
When I see what calibre is and does and compare that to what commercial entities offer, I'm just blown away. After a few weeks of free use, I threw a few bucks Kovid's way.
So, if you have been using calibre purely as a free program, I am now officially Holier Than Thou. |

A lot of us throw random handfuls of money at Kovid. If we keep it up, maybe we can even fund the purchase of an upper-case "C" for the name.

I know I could probably find this out if I wanted to search through the message board but could someone please tell me briefly why Calibre is worth using over what I currently have? I'm a new user of The Nook.

Thanks for reminding me, Jan. Straight into PayPal. A few bucks every month or two from regular users must come in pretty handy for Mr and Mrs Royal -- and they do us all proud. Cheers. Neil

Ahhh ... that feels better. Mille mercis, Kovid, for all you give us so generously. And here's Karma to you and to Jan for reminding me it was time to chip in. Cheers. Neil

Calibre is probably the most powerful and flexible e-book management software around and is continually improving. It will probably be easier to appreciate what this means by trying it after you have used an alternative for a while. |

I downloaded Adobe Digital Editions. Is Calibre a replacement for ADE?

No. ADE is software that handles DRM -- Digital "Rights" (Restrictions) Management. You need it if you choose to buy DRM-locked ebooks (I'm one of the people who chooses not to; why vote with my wallet for something against my own best interests?)
Calibre is ebook management software. It lets you organize your ebook library, convert formats (those that are not DRM-locked), load books on your device, and so on. You can import ebooks you got from anywhere and everywhere into Calibre and tag them, sort them, and generally mess around with them. Think of it as your ebook library's card catalog and circulation desk. Also, when you have a question, you should really start a new thread for it, not hang it on the end of an unrelated thread. Your question here doesn't have anything to do with donating to Calibre, and it won't be seen by a lot of people who could give you better answers. |

Worldwalker laid it out well, Calibre can't view or convert drm ebooks but the program is so much more then that. Check out the Calibre about page and expand each item to get a full overview of what calibre does. |

Here's a one line summary of the difference: ADE exists to sell you books, calibre exists to help you enjoy your books.

After downloading the latest version of calibre today, I kick in some cash also. I'm hoping it all adds up to a nice sum.
The program is outstanding! |
