Tarkington, Booth: The Gentleman From Indiana. v1, 14 February 2012

Tarkington finished college and spent five years writing with little success. Then in 1899 McClure's Magazine serialized The Gentleman from Indiana, which was published as a book in 1900. His long and prolific career was launched, and he was to become one of the most popular (though not critically acclaimed) writers of the first half of the twentieth century.

Here he looks at small-town life in rural Indiana at the end of the nineteenth century. Young John Harkless comes to Plattville to revive a dying newspaper, battles crime and political corruption, and becomes the beloved hero of the county, and the beloved of the requisite beautiful girl. Although many of the characters may be somewhat over-idealized, this story is a celebration of middle-America.

Just one frontispiece illustration in this one.

Scattered through with dry, down-home Hoosier humor, hope you enjoy it.

Hoping for feedback...
