Technologically it seems better to put a light in a case and use that to read your eink display in the dark.

If it can be backlit then it isn't e-ink which is a reflective not a transmissive display... and would rather take away one of the points for e-ink in that your screen doesn't shine a light into your eyes or chew up your battery life...
