Footnotes in MS DOCX as Output Format
Converting from AZW3 or EPUB to DOCX, the footnotes are created as hyperlinks. Is there a way to preserve the footnotes as real DOCX footnotes in converting a book to DOCX?

No, there isn't. Footnotes are not clearly identified as such in ebook formats (well with the exception of epub 3, but those are a vanishingly small fraction of books).

kovidgoyal, perhaps there is a macro of sorts to convert hyperlinks into footnotes?

Dunno, I'm not a user of Word so I'm not familiar with its macro system.

@ukie - if by hyperlinks you mean links to endnotes then no macro is needed, its built into Word ==>> Convert footnotes to endnotes and vice versa

Did you try Toxaris's e-Book Tools - a Word add-in It has an EPUB to Word feature, I don't use it myself. Given ePub2 doesn't really have pages there are footers, hence no footnotes in the normal sense of the word. I would expect ePub 'notes' to convert to MS-Word endnotes. My earlier link tells you how to convert end-notes to footnotes. BR Last edited by BetterRed; 06-30-2016 at 02:57 AM. |

BetterRed,
Thank you for the hint. The plug-in does a splendid job matching the look and feel of the original ePUB file (better than even calibre), unfortunately the footnotes do not transfer over. I can't see why it's such a difficult job to implement. It is not like doing OCR and trying to figure out which number goes to what footnote. Most standard ePUB books already have the hyperlinks so just going one by one and converting them into Word footnotes should do the job. The only slight difficulty that I could think of is determining when the footnote text ends, but even this should not be so hard to get around. Last edited by ukie; 07-02-2016 at 01:36 AM. |

It is very difficult to do, due to various reasons. Biggest reason is that there is no way to tell if it is just an internal link or a note. Like Kovid said, there is no semantic option to identify them.
I am looking for a manual procedure though, but that will take some time to do it right. |

might this help ?
ePub3 spec includes semantic tags for footnotes and rearnotes, Sigil has them in its ePub3 book browser set semantics context menu flyout. BR |

If, and only if, the semantics for notes are used in epub3 it could be used. But there are limited epub3 books and the use of the semantics is not forced. On another note, import of epub3 into word is not yet supported with the add-in.

Looks like calibre 3 has made a huge leap with docx conversion!
Footnotes now work as hyperlinks! I do have one problem though. I have two books. Both covered from AZW3 to DOCX, and both have hyperlinked endnotes. In Word 2016, the hyperlinked endnotes work fine for both books. However, when importing the DOCX file into Logos 7, the hyperlinks are broken with one of the books, but work fine with the other. I noticed that the hyperlinks are linked to word bookmarks...? The problem seems to be associated with the naming of the bookmarks. The book which has working hyperlinks in Logos is the one that has bookmarks composed of all digits, or at least starts with a digit (e.g. "11_9" however, Office Word does not allow bookmarks that start with a digit...). The other book has bookmarks which starts with a letter and combines letters and digits in the name (e.g. "pich02_fn2"). Although, I am not sure if this is the real issue. Would it be possible to add a feature to caliber that converts all internal bookmarks/hyperlinks names to a consistent numbering system (i.e. 1, 2, 3, 4 .... 114332)? Also, is there a way to force all images to be placed or aligned "in-line"?
