Silence is preferable. Now I am simultaneously wondering how did I manage to continue my long study hours and solving mathematics during my college days with a constantly running audio cassette player in my room. Of course, that was 36 years back.

I like music as background noise for reading/writing, though I have found myself getting interrupted by it more as I get older.

Music without words - classical for me - though I can also manage if it's a Latin mass or something.
