It didn't come with anything other than the USB cable to connect to your computer. The 300 uses a mini USB to connect to your computer but you need the Sony PSP barrel plug to charge it via a wall plug.

It will charge while connected to computer (as long as computer is awake).

USB does charge, but very very very slow. My friend plugged in her Motorola RAZR and PRS 300 every night. If you have a habit of charging your phone daily, it shouldn't be a problem.

I've had a 300. They don't charge by USB plug in to the wall. The only way to charge it via a wall plug is the Sony barrel plug charger. USB via a computer yes, but only while the computer is awake otherwise it will drain the battery.

I've still got a 600 (which is functionally identical to a 300 for charging and connection) and the OP was asking about charging by computer and connecting to it... and strictly speaking you can use a USB wall charger if you use a lead wired to a barrel plug of the right size... I've got one that works in this way...

It's different for the 300 for whatever reason, from the 600. The 300 does not charge through the mini USB on the reader and a wall plug. It needs the barrel plug. There have been discussions on this in the past.

I just tried 300 on two phone chargers, one LG, one Motorola. They work. A USB wall charger with attachable cable (generic, made for ipod) does not work. I remember a similar thread about T1, where is it?

You can get dual barrel/mini USB charger cables and the charger brick on eBay. Mine and my daughter's PRS-300 set-up cost us less than $15 each.

Ok, got hhe reader charged, but now find I do not have a user manual. Sony wants $19.95 to purchase one. No way....Is there a site someplace I can get a free one, or can someone just give me basic instructions on how to load books. I use calibre and also have access to PDF.

User Manuals should always be free. But strongly suggest you use Calibre and sideload your books, it makes it very easy to organize that way.
