Amazon selling epub ebooks???

Just had a browse of amazon.com, and it seems that they are now selling epub versions of books to those without kindles.

e.g.

and

Is this correct, or is it just amazon telling us that the kindle version originaly came from an epub? I'm a bit confused

I couldn't download a sample since I am from the United States. However I noted that both of those titles said (Kindle Edition) at the end. I doubt they are really epub editions. I imagine the publisher had that as part of the file name and Amazon was too stupid to remove it when they converted it.

In the case of The Eye of the World, there is also a separate US Kindle version (ASIN: B002U3CCYM) that does not say "ePub" but is also an AZW (MOBI) ebook converted by Amazon from an ePub. See Kindle in an ePub World.

In Amazon's world ePub means "European Publication."
