"It Is Well" by James D. Shipman
Available on Kindle Unlimited and for purchase.
This is a really good novel of World War Two era. But it is really a story of personal responsibility and our duties to the people we love. Jonathan Beecher is a middle aged man in his late 40s, but to me, he acts more like he is 60. Then again, people didn't live as long in those days, so I think his behavior is probably appropriate. He is a widower whose wife had just died from cancer. The story is mostly about him and his personal growth. He is a simple, church going man who owns a small independent hardware store in Snohomish, Washington. While not prosperous, he has managed to feed his family and educate his children. He has 3 children The oldest is a man, fully grown, has not shown any interest in the family business and now works for a major contracting firm of the era and goes all over the world building 'stuff'. The second oldest is a boy who is something of a layabout and doesn't have much to offer the world other than his good looks and quick wit. And the third is a teen-aged girl, who dreams of nothing more than finding a good man and raising a family in Snohomish. Unfortunately for her, all of the young men of a conventionally suitable age go off to war just as she comes of age. All four of these characters show a remarkable growth in ways that I found compelling. Highly recommended The author, Shipman, has two other books available on Amazon.
Based on the "It Is Well", I think this is an author to watch. |
