"BIG" Thrillers
Hello,
I am looking for your favorite BIG thrillers. "BIG? as in big enough to cause a concussion when wielded correctly?" Na-ah - BIG as in this ain't Granny Holmes chasing down the Blue Bubblegum Burglar. This ain't the Neighborhood Watch and the Riddle of the Abandoned Shopping Card. What I am looking for is a story about lost nukes, imminent meteorite strikes, the most feral virus imaginable to evil masterminds, anything that would impact the entire world. Recently finished reading "World War Z", and enjoyed it very much. So a hint of post-apocalypse is fine Cheers, Pismire |

Alistair MacLean's Golden Gate. The president is held for ransom on the Golden Gate Bridge. And the Master mind is also holding The Golden Gate Bridge hostage.

If World War III will do, then Tom Clancy's Red Storm Rising ought to fit the bill. The paper back weighs in at around 750 pages and both the action and overall story are positively gripping. Actually, most of Clancy's Jack Ryan/John Clark books might your requirements relatively well, although they're generally not "OMG, this is literally the end of the world!!!" stories. However, if you decide to pick them up you may want to stay away from the last three, after he began using "co-writers" (which I assume means the "co" actually writes the books, with a little input from Clancy now and then. At least that's how it feels). In particular Dead or Alive, which was an epic, epic downer.

Don't you mean "Door Stopper" thrillers. This is the term that I have encountered on the internet several times. The term referrs to books that are so big they could be used as door stoppers, and often are.

Hey,
the bible, good point I have read a fair amount of Tom Clancy's books, and am looking for new inspirations. Though that is generally the direction I am thinking, even though it may well be less action-prone. You hardly get a chance to enjoy the tension before some Russian starts shooting at a Yankee, or vice versa That said, gun-toting main characters are not a must at all. As for Joe Ledger, I'll give it a look. As I said, I am looking for BIG as in story/impact and not page count Cheers |
